I'm currently running a natural disturbance model on my PC, which compares forest management schemes to historical records for natural disturbance. Yeah... I know. Who cares? I just thought I'd mention it, cause I think it's really cool.
Anyway, since I am running the model, I can't do anything else until it is finished. So I thought that now might be a good time to update.
Not much has been going on here. It's the dead of winter and it's dark all the time, so I'm not all that motivated to do anything. Plus, I took on a small contract for a company in Halifax, which is outside of my full time job, so I don't have a hell of a lot of free time anyway. I have been pretty much just been working, going to the gym, and then hanging out home doing other work. But that takes just about all the time I have anyway. Occassionally I will make it to a coffee shop or a lounge just to get out. I am going to see David Francey in St. Albert this week, so that should be fun. Too bad it's a four day camel ride to get there.
Right now, I'm looking forward to taking some time off soon, and travelling to Halifax for a week or so. I expect to bee in Halifax from April 14th until the 23rd. Please don't rush to block off your calendars. After that, I hope to take another week somewhere, but I haven't quite narrowed it down yet. I'm hoping to find away to fly around the world for under a hundred bucks. So far, no luck.
When I get back, I'm hoping to be moving into a new place. However, with the vacancy rate so low, I'm a little bit concerned of where I'm gong to end up. It's so hard to find anything that is available, and most places don't honour their waiting lists. I just want to get away from the insomniac sumu wrestling meth addicts with Turret's syndrome that live up stairs from me now.
I was hoping to to buy something this spring, but I did not get quite as far as I hoped in paying off past debts and saving for the down payment. And the fact that the average price for a house has increased 52% in the last year, makes it hard to keep up. The average price for a house right now in Edmonton is somewhere around $350,000. That's a bit beyond my budget, and if current trends are maintained, even a condo in a reasonable part of town will be out of reach.
I have more or less decided that I will not stay in Edmonton for the long term, but even owning for a year or less is well worth it here. I could sell the place in about 5 minutes if I wanted to. A few people I work with have been buying and selling houses, and there are bidding wars. In fact, most experts are recommending that if you wish to buy, you should get a real estate agent well ahead of time, since most listings that are found in a guide are gone soon after they hit the news stands, and quite often before. Oh well... it will make it seem all the easier when I move back to Halifax some day.
My model just finished, so back to work for me. That's about all I can think of right now anyway. Hopefully I will see some of you on my visit to Halifax.
