*sigh* Growing up, I got the impression that the conservative philosophy could be summed up as follows:
1) The world is been a miserable place, it always was, and always shall be.
2) So shut up and stop whining.
3) If you work hard, you shall succeed.
(Corollary to 3: If you didn't succeed, think long and hard about what would have happened if you had worked harder. And be honest.)
4) People uninhibited by morality and laws are stupid, lazy, and selfish.
5) Laws should really be kept to the bare minimum, though, as the most stupid, lazy, and selfish people all gravitate towards government positions. Morality's the most important thing, but it has to be taught or learned the hard way. For the benefit of our children, we would really prefer "taught" to the alternative.
6) Turning into a fluffy bunny doesn't make the people across the table from you turn into fluffy bunnies.
I may have forgotten a few tenets, but those are the core ones, I think. The summary without tenets (and thus one that includes the fuzzy gray areas between the tenets and roughly defines "morality") is "Conservatives = Objectivist Hufflepuffs [without the massive speeches and Rand's more deeply batshit ideas]". :D;;
Unfortunately, as I find out more about the beliefs of "conservatives" nowadays, I find that their tenets go something more like this:

Morality's the most important thing, but it has to be taught or YOU SHALL ALL BURN IN HELLFIRE! learned the hard way. For the benefit of our children, we would really prefer "taught" to the alternative so we shall make it mandatory in schools! Even though, you know, they're so messed up that they can't teach children how to ADD, but we'll trust our children's morality and immortal souls with them anyway.
6) If [t]urning into a SOLJER 4 GAWD fluffy bunny doesn't make the people across the table from you turn into SOLJERS 4 GAWD fluffy bunnies, you must TRY HARDER or BURN IN HELL FOREVER!!! .

I admit to flaking out on 2 and 3 because I'm lazy and irritable. I also do believe in God, wish people wouldn't get abortions but understand shit happens and it's medically necessary in some cases and so on, disagree with a lot of the things the Democratic Party believes in, etc. (Although due to aforesaid "fluffy bunny" rule, neither I nor my family believe the entire "turn the other cheek" thing is the best idea.) So I'm not bashing anti-Democrats or religious people or any of that, but... AAAAAAAARRRGH. Where the hell did the true conservatives go? Who are these nuts in their place? XP GTFO what I thought was my political party, please. *facepalm* *siiiiiiiigh* In a democracy, one should never have to vote for a candidate only because he's the lesser of two evils. *goes off into a corner, still bitching*
EDIT: By "I wish people wouldn't get abortions but understand [...]", I mean "I wish that they had bothered/had been able to use birth control in the first place", but understand that people make mistakes/sometimes they just don't HAVE birth control available until it's too late (in the case of rapes, etc.)", not "THEY SHOULD POP OUT BABIES FOR BABIES' SAKE!!111!". Just realized that might be misinterpreted. :D;;
