The encounter in Las Vegas had not gone according to Dimitri's plan, but it had been a step in the right direction and Rose had been most definitely shaken up by their meeting, which counted in Dimitri's favor. The trip to the east coast had been uneventful, other than the deaths he and his remaining minions caused, but now Dimitri was focused on his next step. The incessant buzz of his telephone pulled Dimitri from his brooding, and he clicked a finger against the speakerphone.
"Yes?" Strigoi did not bother with pleasantries. Anyone who had Dimitri's number should expect nothing more.
"Um, you could at least identify yourself if you're gonna keep refusing to say hi," came Jessi's annoying whine.
Ah, just what Dimitri needed to put him in a fresh rage. "Jessi, you called me. What is it?"
"Well, I know how you said not to bother you while you were working on your American Strigoi Mafia credentials, but this totally falls in the super important category," Jessi insisted. "I mean, you left me to run things in Russia, where the cold and darkness are practically endless and I've done a really good job to the point where you have to admit I'm kind of awesome, right?" Totally awesome.
"Jessi..." Dimitri growled. "Get. To. The. Point."
"Your-shows-are-clogging-the-DVR! But they all say KEEP so I have to like, forcibly delete them forever if I want to make sure I get to see ANTM, which only seems to air during super important business hours--" AKA feeding time. "--but I know how important--"
"Which shows?" Dimitri interrupted, glaring at the very thought Jessi was interrupting him for television programming issues.
"Attractive Young Fibb--"
"Delete it," he said instantly, preferring no one hear exactly what he watched. Look, controlling Strigoi was a difficult job and sometimes Dimitri liked to unwind with the programs he'd...attempted to enjoy as a dhampir. "I've seen them."
"The whole season?" Jessi checked, wanting to ensure plenty of space for Tyra's massive forehead. "How is that even possible?"
Dimitri had nothing to glare at but the phone laying on his desk. "There was a marathon! We had an off night! Do you dare judge me?!"
"Um, no...nononono Dimitri, sir! I am taking care of it as we speak. Though, since you've seen them, maybe you can explain to me why the girl is so concerned abou--"
All Jessi would hear now was a dial tone. No way Dimitri was engaging in the rest of that discussion. Sometimes he really regretted kidnapping Jessi.
