Dimitri coughed, the movement of his flesh reforming pushing the wooden stake out of his body just enough for his lungs to react and wake him. He sat up abruptly and ripped the stake the rest of the way free. "Rose!" The hoarse whisper was filled with angry disappointment. And perhaps a touch of pride at how devious she'd been.

In an instant, the hole in his chest was healed and he was punching in the code on the doors only to find Marlen attempting to beat down the exterior entrance. He didn't have the time for this and shoved the Strigoi aside, punched in the code, and freed himself to chase down his dhampir. In Dimitri's mind, she still had to be somewhere within the house. It was near freezing outside and Rose was too weak to to make it all the way to town without assistance...unless she had played him.

When he found Rose grappling with Galina in the library he took it as his last opportunity. Galina would kill Rose - but not if he killed Galina first. Dimitri attacked his former teacher with everything he had, fully aware that his defeat would be his death.

As always, Rose had strangely perfect timing. Dimitri was just beginning to feel he might lose the fight when Rose tossed a chair through a window and distracted the Strigoi. He twisted his hold on Galina, leaving her chest open, and met Rose's eyes. Like the exceptional student she'd been, Rose understood and crossed the room to drive her stake home just before Marlen and Nathan attacked Dimitri. He called to her again, but Rose leaped out of the broken window, leaving him to deal with his own fate.

Lucky for Dimitri, he'd not been lying when he promised he could kill Nathan without hesitation. With no stake at his disposal, Dimitri went for the decapitation option, using a piece of broken furniture and his powerful hands to tear his former companions apart.

In minutes, he was following Rose's scent in the chill night air, calling out to her, "Roza! I know you're out here." She could run, perhaps, but there was no hiding. "I can smell you!"
