Hunger Clean Up 2009

So today I did a good deed and volunteered for the Hunger Clean Up at the site located on campus.  I got dirty but my soul feels cleansed.

About the program:  the Hunger Clean Up is a one day event in which students and other individuals volunteer their time to help clean up around the community in effort to raise money for those who cannot afford food.  I think it's a pretty neat cause because not only does it feed those in need but it helps out the community at the same time.

Since I'm lacking a great deal of satisfaction at my job, I've been wanting to volunteer for some time now.  My only hesitation has been that while search for a volunteer opportunity, I haven't really come across anything that is "me." You know?

I tried the crisis center thing and it was far too intense for me to continue.  Although I never actually interacted with a victim before, the possibility itself was extremely nerve wrecking.

I realized that although I want to build on my resume, I also want opportunities to be "lighter" and a bit more social since my job lacks in the social department.  My only problem is the fact that the probability of me attending these events alone are highly likely.  I guess I could have tried to invite a friend but most are usually busy with other obligations... so I tend to assume that they wouldn't be interested.  Anywho, I wasn't thrilled about attending this event alone.  But instead of punking out for selfish reasons, I realized that this for once wasn't about me.  So I got my ass up and out the door and onto campus.

But I wouldn't be "alone" for long.  As soon as I entered the campus' plaza I ran into my friend Phonzie Bear.  I was sooo happy to see him!  It was definitely a nice surprise.  It made things a ton better to have a friend there.  He was there with a frat brother who were already assigned to clean an elderly woman's yard.  So I tagged along with them and boy were the three of us worked.  The elderly woman or "the slave driver", as the boys entitled her was very specific with what she wanted.  The yard had to be raked, weeded and many other gardening terms that went above my head.

Thank goodness for the weather!  It was sunny and beautiful.  It made the labor intensive yard work somewhat decent.  After literally fleeing the yard (the woman was sweet but would have had us working all day if we hadn't run away) we headed back to the campus for some lunch.  Man was that lunch well deserved.  We all were beat up and exhausted and that food was the only thing keeping me from keeling over.

After we headed up to the guys frat office and enjoyed some good ol' youtube and then I took my tired butt home.  I slept for 3 hours.  I couldn't believe how exhausted I was...lol.  All in all I thought it was a pretty productive day.  Although I spent the rest of my day filling my noggin with bull shit television, I could have spent the entire day doing so... I'm extremely proud of myself!

I have a few weeks to rest up because in May I have my Habitat for Humanity meeting to attend and I'm really psyched about this opportunity.  I've been hoping to stumble across this event for years now but never had the motivation to put the thought into action.  Plus, I've been on this whole interior designer kick for a really long time (thanks to HGTV) so I'm so excited for the chance to learn some practical skills to use for my new apartment!

So maybe, just maybe through all of this I can find my true calling.  Maybe.
