There are definitely some people who completely fail to take into account the cost of repairing their computer, compared to its current value. Just a few years ago, I was doing work study in my college's IT department. One of the professors brought in his laptop, complaining that it ran too slow, and some of the programs he installed just wouldn't work. He claimed he didn't care how we made it work, he just wanted us to get rid of the virus or whatever it was that kept programs from working on his laptop. He did tell us that he wasn't going to fall for any of our tricks to try and get more money out of him by making him upgrade to a new computer or anything, when he knew perfectly well that was unnecessary.
Then he left, and we booted up his laptop to be greeted by the glory of Windows 3.1.
