* Governor General reveals her sad childhood

Signs That I Have Become A Total Narutard
FirstThoughtUponSeeingTheHeadline: Damn, is she the next character to be (almost) killed off? I rather liked her.

Through seriously, after reading the article, I'm glad she did what she did, and putting a human face on issues, is kinda her job after all. Actually, the official thing is to be a represenative, do a bunch of ceremonial stuff, which is good because it allows the spouse of the PM to stay out of the spotlight shall s/he choose. Whereas from what I heard, in the States, the First Lady actually has her own staff, which could suck, because hey, what if the wife the the leader, that didn't chose to run in office and just happens to have married someone who did, didn't want the job?

Governor General reveals her sad childhood
Mar. 9, 2006. 07:51 PM

VANCOUVER (CP) - Canada's governor general is unafraid of being open about her own childhood sadness in an effort to put a human face on the office of the Queen's representative in Canada, Michaelle Jean's spokesman said Thursday.

At a luncheon hosted by the Lieutenant-Governor Iona Campagnolo on Wednesday in Victoria, Jean spoke openly about how she witnessed her father abuse her mother when she was a little girl.

She also talked about what it was like to live as a new immigrant in a small basement apartment with her mother and sister.

Her frankness on such personal experiences was a strategic move, said her spokesman Randy Mylyk.

"Through her offices, she uses it to provide an opportunity to raise awareness on issues affecting youth and affecting women and affecting new Canadians. It's putting a very human and sort of a personal face on the role of governor general and how it can be used to raise awareness."

Jean ended her visit of British Columbia Thursday by attending an Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneur Symposium.
