BTW, I wanted to add I agree with you with these scare tatics, you have these uneducated conservatives saying Gay marriage will open the door to child abuse is sicking. At the same time you have people calling Harper a bible thumping Christian or a warhawk.
Remember those Election ads by the liberals saying Harper would invest in a huge military and send troops to Iraq? and the images that flashed across the screen? stealth bombers and aircraft carriers? It's a simple fear tatic and I think a lot of people might have bought into voting for another party just soley in the reason of those scary images. The truth be known we need a bigger military, we need to rent aircraft, we have ships that sink and rifles from 1968 that are being carried around still. I think it was sun tzu that said "If you want peace, prepare for war." And currently we can't do nothing.

And Finally, the chinese community isn't the only community with these lanuage barriers. I worked for Elections Canada and a lot of people didn't know where or who to vote for in my community and I have had my sihk friends tell me that it is a problem also. Eventually they will intergrate, a prime example is the Italian community, they would only vote liberal and now they are looking to alternatives to the liberal party, it takes a generation or two for communities to "catch up" to the Canadian system. I want to assure you that during the election we (the workers) did all we could to help new immgrant voters to be educated and when a translator wasn't handy we had a booklet of 51 different lanuages, but some voters could not read or write thier own native tounge, which made the situation hopeless.

Hn, interesting that Italian communities vote Liberal, from what I hear of Italy's numerous parties that are constantly shifted, I'm envious.

From what I know, new Chinese immigrant are actually quite apt to vote Conservative. I think it was Ming Pao Saturday who pointed out that new Chinese immigrant are economic opportunist, think American but with a greater drive because they have to paid for their children's extra tutoring programs, piano, sports, some parents seem to want every program they can fit their child in if they could afford. Part of wanting to establish connections, Chinese who are nonbelievers, at least they start out that way, will go to church, my parents nagged me for years to go because of that. In the relatively recent (as in a few hundred years) Chinese culture, homosexuality is viewed as unnatural, and this view is held without religious conviction at all, imagine how potent that would be after they join into some Chinese Baptist church that practically grab them off the street? Someone without religious views can become very homogenous with the church this way, in a strange new place that aren't always welcoming even in unintentional way. What really pissed me off about my former Baptist church, is that they gotten my grandmother to vote. My grandmother doesn't watch the news much, neither does she keep up with politics, she's illiterate and she doesn't speak English. It feels like they are using her, my own grandmother, to cast a vote to take away my rights to what I do with my own body. I’ve seen the pamphlets they have, it’s the choice for them between Alliance (now Conservative), and Christian Heritage Party.
