In yesterday evening's episode of Mentalist, a doctor was found dead at a driving range. As the members of the investigation were reviewing the basic information, it was stated that he was survived by his husband. The issue was treated very matter-of-factly, no differently than if he had been survived by a wife.
His being in a same-sex marriage was not plot-related, did not bring up any questions, or anything like that. There would have no change to the plot or story at all if he had been in an opposite sex marriage except for a change in pronouns and a change in actors playing the spouse (or doctor if they had made him female).
I really liked the fact that the same sex marriage was in the episode but treated as so normal there was no need for comment.
