The first US Census numbers are indicating that 150,000 gay couples say they're married even though only about 100,000 marriage certificates and civil union-ships have been issued. The number is also about 27% of all gay couples surveyed, which is surprising people. It surprises me, too, but for a different reason - of all cohabitating gay ( Read more... )

Good point. It may be an indicator that people have left the country to obtain what they cannot get here.

So... Some of these co-habitating couples might just be friends with benefits, or at an early stage in a relationship where they don't consider themselves "husband and wife".

Some of them, absolutely. The article says that only 91% of all heterosexual cohabitating couples are married, so clearly there are people who are earlier in their relationship and not wed...but I have a hard time believing that 63% of gay couples are fwb or new couples. Make all the lesbian moving van jokes you want, but it's still a pretty large percentage - and such a drastically different number from years past - that it seems unlikely.

Unfortunately we'll never get a dully reliable statistical picture, but it's heartening to see so many people being open.

Looking at the article, though, there are a lot fewer couples reporting marriage this year than there were two years ago. So I'm not sure how "open" people in general are being.
