Four teenage boys - three 14-year-olds and one 15-year-old - have been
charged as adults in the sexual assault of a 13-year-old boy. The incident occurred in the locker room of their school, and involved holding the victim down and using a broomstick and hockey stick on him. If convicted on all four counts, the teens each face 120 years in prison.
His screams could be heard outside of the locker room and there were multiple witnesses, but no one came forward. Where the hell were the adults? That's about as mortifying to me as the actual violent act. But is charging these middle school kids as adults really the best course of action? I know the victim is likely to be messed up, but 8th graders do stupid things. Putting them in adult jail and then prison for the rest of their lives seems excessive. It's likely a tool to get them to plead out, but still, they've been put in adult jail. Putting a 14-year-old boy into that situation is putting them in danger, if they aren't segregated.
