Writing meme, day 5, (characters) and vacation!

5 - If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?

Let them, of course.  ::shrugs:: I learned about, oh, two years in, that my stories work *better* if I let the characters do whatever my flying fingers say they did.  If I type something, stop, stare at it, and go, "What the hell?"... I tend to leave it in.  Even if I have to back up and figure out what now?, since they've thrown my plans to hell and gone.  I've had a character shift sides mid-battle (Farrell in Sirocco, which is what taught me this) and pull tricks I never saw coming (Cory and that damn skunk in Appearances) and off-handedly reveal talents I knew nothing about (McCormick in Antiquities).  And I don't even want to talk about the anatomically incorrect golem in Ill-Met By Moonlight.  Generally, when this happens?  The characters are right, or my subconscious is, or whatever.

It's what works for me.  Do any of y'all have this happen too?

The full list of questions, linked to answers, is here.

Also, I'm traveling on vacation most of tomorrow and next Tuesday.  I may be on in between, but if I'm not, I'll take this back up when I get back.  Don't be surprised if responses are very slow!
