Title: Sunshine Smile
Fandom: Heroes
Pairing: Peter/Claire
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Peter remembers her smile.
A/N: This was written because of the wonderful response I got from the
Jack/Kate (from LOST) one. Originally wanted to submit this to
pairechallenge, but it's longer than 100 words, so that obviously didn't work out. So, enjoy & leave me comments, as always, whether you loved it or hated it! :D
I.
She saves his life, not with her power
but with her smile;
that sad, little one that he remembers from Odessa
on pink cheerleader lips
reflected in a glass trophy case.
II.
She saves his life again
and he wakes to see that
dazzling
s m i l e
teary and adoringly directed at his
crustyred tattoed skin
Burns, burns, burns, bright yellow into his brain;
the brain she just pulled the glass from.
He thinks that if she smiles like that again
the rest of the world can be saved, too.
III.
Drops of silver
slip out of her eyes with the words
I'm not normal
and he feels his heart ache for her.
Tracks of pain on her cheeks
and she says that he made her feel like she was a
part of something.
He touches her, almost feels her
wet lashes on his fingertips
and wipes away the tears
(He hopes he can paint sunshine on her face again.
It's his turn to save her now.)
IV.
He lights up the night with
orangepinkredgrayandblue
but what he sees before all goes black
is gold;
her curls a halo around a youngold face
and he says to himself Don't Die
You've Got To Get Her Smile Back;
even if it's a sad, little one again.
V.
Memories are faded like
flowers in a biting, blowing wind
and he struggles to remember his own name.
He's being cradled childlike
and it's her
kisses against his eyelids
and he can feel her upturned lips
leave permanent seeping stains
on his broken white skin
VI.
"My name is Claire," says she
and he knows;
Claire the cheerleader,
Claire Nathan's daugher
Claire your niece
C l a i r e
the one thing he didn't forget.
"Yours is Peter," says she
and he doesn't care
love you like a pleasure pain dances on the lake under the stars
(Just smile for me,
and he wants to transfer his ability to read minds
over to her.)
VII.
She saved his life
but now he's dying
gray and stone cold
stiff in a tux
watches her walk to the altar
kiss, laugh, I do!, kiss
another man
and Peter wishes he had
never met her
her smile was never his
VIII.
Brown hands twist
gracefully slowly
over his glazed face
"Take her away," is the alcoholic slur
and a satin whisper of a new future
one where his love for her is not set in
(a diamond that he didn't give her)
stone
and she can't burn him with sunshine anymore.
IX.
Las Vegas lights and lust;
there are no heroes here
it's up to him to save himself
in this crepuscule
Black swallows him whole.
But sometimes
sparks of yellowgoldsparklewhitesunshine
glide in front of his eyes when he closes them.
