2010 fandom meme and yuletide

Jan 05, 2011 21:25

I decided not to repost my yuletide fic here yet, because the lovely dhobikikutti (http://dhobikikutti.dreamwidth.org/) offered to beta it. I didn't manage to get it beta'd before the reveal, so this should help me improve it. Especially as dhobikikutti is Indian and the fic was for Dil Chahta Hai. It's always useful to get input from someone who is a member of the culture your work deals with. Well, I'll post it later. You can start twiddling your fingers in anticipation :P

Fandom meme, ganked from chisakami

1. Your main fandom of the year?
Figure skating, Bollywood, Inception, Robin of Sherwood (TV series), Tangled .

2. Your favorite film watched this year?
Inception (in the cinema, twice :D), Tangled (went to the cinema for my birthday), 500 Days of Summer, Lorna Doone (the new version, the old one is terrible!). Also a whole bunch of Sanjeev Kumar, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar films. Seriously, they don't make Bollywood leading men like they used to :P

3. Your favorite book read this year?
Let the Right One In - I've loved the film for a while, and now I love the book too. Also I re-read Narnia (I read it as a kid), and it's still awesome. There was also Ijin tachi tono matsu (the Polish title is Obcy, can't seem to find the English one now) by Taichi Yamada. It's sort of a ghost story, but with a twist. It's also more about psychology than being scary.

4. Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
La Roux by La Roux. It was out in 2009 but I discovered it only last year through DwTs. Evan danced a cha-cha to Bulletproof. I don't listen to the radio enough, do I? :P I also loved the soundtracks of 500 Days of Summer, Aandhi, Guide and Aap Ki Kasam (Bollywood golden oldies :D). There's also the Bleach Concept Covers album, that came out at the end of the year. Some songs suck, but a few are amazing and Masakazu Morita's (Ichigo's voice actor) Asterisk is a prime example of this. I can listen to it on repeat for hours xD Have a listen:

5. Your favorite TV show of the year?
True Blood and Robin of Sherwood (watched it as a kid, re-watched it November and loved it, why does it have to be so short? :()

6. Your favorite LJ community of the year?
ontd_skating - it has its ups and downs, but overall is awesome

7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Inception as a whole (the film, the fandom, appreciating the members of the cast more than I used to), lol, how original :P and figure skating RPF (burns in hell)

8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Onimusha (1). I always wanted to check it out, and when I finally got to buy it (it was a real bargain at least :D), and play with my brother over Christmas (he did most of the playing, and I watched because I'm not too good at such games :P) it just didn't impress me as much as I expected. It's not a bad game; it's very solid, but it just lacks the wow! factor. And it's not because of it's age, it's still quite impressive technically. It's because of the lackluster (and at times even stupid) plot and the bland characters. How can you make a bland character based on Takeshi Kaneshiro, dammit?! Yes, Samanosuke is still gorgeous (and really does look like Takeshi - pulling that off in 2001 was really quite the feat!), but he's such a bore. His dialogues were terrible, he has no sense of humour, and was stiff as a poker (the bad English dub didn't help either :/, but getting and playing the Japanese version would be hard :/). IDK, maybe he does get a personality in the later games. Also I couldn't bring myself to care much for the princess. I didn't care about saving her, it was just an objective. The bosses were terribly designed too. No strategy, only hitting them 9000 times until they die. So, as I said, not a terrible game, just a mediocre one. A disappointment considering I've been wanting to get it for 10 years.

As far as real people fandoms go, there was Evan's twitter mess, which I won't discuss further here. It's forgiven but not forgotten. And the Vancouver controversies, which took away a bit of my heppi after Evan's win (but just a bit :P).

9. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
Sanjeev Kumar. I have a terrible crush on him. His having been dead for almost 30 years makes me really sad... Also Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar (they're in their eighties, but still charming xD), Michael Praed and Evan. Aamir remains awesome as usual too. And if animated characters count, then Flynn from Tangled :P

10. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Jaya Bachchan. I just discovered her old films. She still is an amazing actress but now she usually does mother roles, it turned out that she was an amazing heroine as well. Bubbly (but not TOO bubbly :P)and adorable. I discovered her through watching Sanjeev Kumar's films. They were an amazing jodi. Watch Anamika,Koshish and Naya Din Nayi Raat with them, now! :D
Have a cute song from Anamika:

11. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Evan winning the Olys and reaching the finale of DwtS, Daisha and Mao winning the Worlds and medaling at the Olys as well.

12. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Bleach and Gintama. I've been so out of them recently, it's painful to think how much catching up I gotta do :/ (I started to do it with Bleach, let's see how long it takes :P) All because Bollywood and skating took over :P

13. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Supernatural (hot guys and lots of lulz judging from the clips I saw on youtube), The X-Files (believe it or not, I never watched it properly), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (same), Twin Peaks (same). My brother and his girlfriend would be game for watching this stuff, we just need to have more free time on our hands than now.

14. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Kiran Rao's Dhobi Ghat. The look of the film is amazing, and Kiran seems like a very intelligent and sensitive creator. It also has Aamir and Prateik in it, and Gustavo Santaolalla composed the soundtrack, so what's not to love? ;)
Here's the trailer, have a look:

Well, also the figure skating Euros and Worlds are getting closer, and I wish for Team Japan to kick major ass xD Especially Mao and Daisha should just repeat what they did last year ;) I'm also curious as to what Evan is up to...

Then there's of course Bleach and the NEW ARK which will hopefully restore the golden age. That would be it for now, I think :)

meme, fandom, rant, too much stuff to tag, yuletide
