So, I managed to get a wicked head-cold at one of my going-away parties, so I've spent my first couple of days in Boulder nursing said cold and not being as enthused about things as I otherwise might be, but...yay Boulder!
2manynotes is very graciously putting me up until my movers arrive, either Friday or Tuesday. I arrived on Tuesday afternoon, and picked up the keys to my apartment on Wednesday morning. It is Spartan, no two ways about it. I ended up deciding to live (at first) in university-owned family housing, adjacent to campus, for several reasons -- it was super easy to arrange long-distance, and I wouldn't need a car right out of the gate (I didn't own a car in SF). So I have a two-bedroom little apartment, with walls that are either concrete (exterior) or wood-paneled (interior), which will help guarantee that I don't live there for TOO long. I can live there up to a year, and can vacate with 45-days notice, and it is pretty much exactly what I needed to start -- a place that is big enough for me and super close to campus.
After I made a trip to Safeway to buy a few necessaries (toilet paper, etc.) yesterday morning, I wander onto campus and stopped by the library to see if I could find my office unassisted (negative). My office is off a stairwell in a kind of "between-floors" way, and is thus somewhat elusive to find if you don't know where to look. I don't know whether to make a Lewis Carroll reference or a Being John Malkovich reference. Anyway, I have an office, and it has a window. And in contrast to my apartment, I'll be able to hang things on the wall pretty easily.
I chatted both with my new boss and the woman who is sort of my second in command. Everyone is eager for me to start, surprise surprise.
At that point, it was pushing 1:30pm and I needed lunch, so I went to the student union and had a bite. It's kind of strange to be walking around a campus again, but I also have a strong sense of homecoming. I've seen myself as an academic librarian for some years now, and I do feel back on track with this transition.
Out of energy (remember that I'm sick!) and knowing that
2manynotes had obligations for a couple more hours, I snuck into the music library (in the sense that I didn't identify myself as a new member of the library faculty) and listened to some Mahler 9 for a while. It was a long, exhausting day.
