The first time they break up, it tears his heart apart. After so many years ignoring her, now that she's part of his life, he can't imagine her not being there.
Somehow, he manages to convince his parents that he doesn't need to go to school for that day, and just sits and pouts in his bedroom. In his head, he's picturing her at school, happy and smiling and thankful that she doesn't have him around. After all, she pined away for years for him -- wouldn't it make sense that the actual product didn't deliver?
He's under the covers when Charlie finds him. "You didn't show up to practice." Linus grunts in response, covers still firmly over his head. There's such a long pause that Linus is convinced he's alone in the room but when he peeks out, he's proven wrong. "What's wrong?"
"Sally dumped me," comes the muffled reply. "She dumped me because I told her to change her shoes since you can't wear heels to the ball park and she mentioned something about how dare I not like her shoes, and since I don't like her shoes which she loves, I must not like her very much either and that she never wanted to see me again." He lifts a corner of the sheets and looks out. Charlie Brown has this incredulous look on his face. "What?"
"This is why you've locked yourself up in your room?" Charlie stands up and yanks the sheets off of Linus's bed, ignoring the protests. "You're a moron. She's outside, by the way, and probably has already forgotten she said that." Frowning, Linus gets out of bed, and looks out the window. Sure enough, there's Sally, happily chatting away with Rerun. She glances up and a smile lights up her face.
"Babboo," she calls out, "I got my shoes! Let's go! We're waiting!" She shakes out a foot, clad in white Nikes and giggles. "You're such a doodlehead, you know that?"
Over the years, he comes to learn that they will never agree on anything, nor do they even see things the same way. If something will destroy him, it'll perk her up. If something will make him happy, it'll annoy her, and yet, despite -- or maybe even because -- of these differences, he knows there's something more there.
It's what made him want to spend the rest of his life with her, even if other people don't think it's a good idea.
Compatibility.
Who cares.
What matters is a high tolerance level, and an open mind -- at least, that's how it works for them.
