As I sit on my couch, avoiding a stack of poorly-written high school student essays, I browse the Not a Blog and find...well, nothing of import. HBO book signings, clips from upcoming GOT episodes, and a mention of working on proofing ADWD for the July 12th release. I must say, I do eagerly await that possible day when I'll have new things to complain about.
Speaking of which, my librarian co-conspirators have promised to funnel me a copy of ADWD if and when it arrives in their collection. Part of me is considering a play-by-play review, posting up my thoughts after every few chapters. Another part of me thinks that perhaps I should give it a full read-through before posting, as that would (1) avoid spoilers for anyone who gets whiny about such things, and (2) might inform my opinions of the individual parts and their worthiness, or lack thereof.
I have a feeling I won't be able to hold my tongue (shocker, I know) long enough to make it through a full reading, but your input is welcome.
Regarding the HBO series, I continue to believe...meh. I think it's a series that definitely appeals more to those who haven't read the books. Pesci and I have routine conversations about how quickly the narrative seems to be moving, and how certain characters seem to have been reimagined for the screen in ways that are not entirely beneficial. Jaime needs to be more obnoxious. The Hound is pretty much window dressing right now. Sansa looks creepy. And Dany is still a boring-ass character, no matter what medium she is portrayed in. But hey, at least my favorite dude Syrio came out pretty okay, I think, even though these swordfights are still more camera trickery than choreography.
I'm pretty confused by why the direwolves seem to have been relegated to being almost irrelevant, as I thought GRRM would have had some sort of larger plan for them. But it doesn't look like Ghost went to the Wall, and Cat didn't start her obsession with having Summer around Bran at every moment after he killed the assassin. But, on the plus side, at least I don't have to deal with Rickon and Shaggydog...god I hate children.
On a personal note, I vote for recasting The Hound with Vinny Jones:
Side note: this photo came from a news article about Vinny Jones being arrested after a bar fight in South Dakota. How awesome is this dude?
Signing off.
