Depending on the set-up, I'm willing to bet the blacksmith was using charcoal, which he may even have made himself. I don't think propane releases enough carbon.

Of the teeth thing. Don't worry, it'll sting a little bit at first, but it DOES NOT HURT. You feel them working in your mouth, but... you feel no pain.
