it has, indeed, been several weeks since my last post... since that time i have done a couple of rounds of changes to my Scribble Flower design, including some changes done on a wet/dry acrylic overlay:
this is a fast and convenient way to change a painting, and working with the wet/dry media is fun - reminds me of old school animation ink and paint. anyway, i’ve also taken two of my fourteen required style workshops. these are held on saturdays and usually go from 9 to 4. you show up to class with your paint and paper and (hopefully) leave with something finished or something that demonstrates that you know how to do the technique.
the first workshop was last week: Baroque Ornaments. using Dover copyright-free etching reproductions, we learned the specific shading and coloring techniques common to this motif in industry - the resulting artwork can be used for anything from wallpaper to paper goods. personally, i’d like to see those motifs on paper napkins, bridal goods, and christmas paper, but apparently people still like that dark, dreary, overly-dramatic wallpaper border stuff in the baroque style. we have to have examples of both - so i’m taking the opportunity to go through some of my movie palace books and draw some of the plaster motifs just for fun (and for my portfolio). more photos on that later, but below you'll see my finished blue motif (i realize now that i have a much better appreciation for baroque ornamentation and its applications)...
this week (yesterday) was my Ikat and Woven Motif class. not quite as fun as the baroque workshop. my first in-class piece (on the right below) looked to me like bad 80s southwest crapola... but i painted another more example (top center) and i figured out a method of working (and a color palette) that actually worked with the motif:
for this coming week, we have been assigned the task of making 15 quick abstract doodles for an abstract scribble textile design... i’m already done with those:
i'll be anxious to see which one our instructor (aka our "client") picks out, and what color scheme to use, and also the layout! this one should be a lot more of a fun assignment than the scribble flower has been. i made my shapes simpler, as i'm sick to death of painting tiny petals.
i guess i get a reward for all this hard work - saturday i *finally* get to see r.e.m. in concert at the hearst greek theater here in berkeley (just down the hill from the lab's lower parking lot)! between all the finished paintings and the concert, i'm totally stoked...
