The biopsy came back as a benign granular cell tumor. So, very good news, except for the fact I needed a second surgery to take out an even bigger hunk of my tongue, just to be sure it doesn't grow back.
I've never been put under before so I was a little nervous, but on the way to OR they gave me some happy meds that left me giggling as we wheeled the stretcher down the hallway. I don't remember them asking me to count backwards or anything like that. I just remember an oxygen mask being put over my face and being told to breath. I got really tired and next thing I know was waking up coughing and crying, the only reason I knew I had surgery being the pain in my mouth. I coughed all the way back to recovery from the stupid breathing tube, and once there was given the first dose of my morphine happy pills.
I went loopy from the meds and the nurses proceeded to call me a "Cheap Date", which I thought was pretty damn funny. Some cranberry juice and jello later I was sent home with the roommates. There wasn't nearly as much swelling as the last time, which is kind of interesting since the hole they cut out was about the size of one of those flattened pennies you can get at tourist traps. I figured I'd be fine and continued eating my jello and yogurt until about 2 days later when I went to visit Johnny. I tried to eat some delicious spaghetti his mom had made, and suddenly all hell broke loose in my mouth. Turns out the roof of my mouth was extremely bruised from the breathing tube, and my jaw just a wee bit over-extended. Since then, (the day before yesterday) my whole head has felt like a war zone everywhere except for my tongue. (Seems like my body is bound and determined that if I can't feel pain in my tongue then I'm sure as hell going to feel it everywhere else.) I've been eating morphine and jello like nobody's business, one minute nodding off while holding an ice pack to my face, the other minute shaking like an addict going through withdrawal and struggling not to throw up everywhere. I did take a picture of the massive crater in my mouth this time, but I'll upload it with the next post.
I know, I know, you can't wait to see it, can you?
gross,
scary
