1/3 down, 29 & 2/3 to go!

As I've said previously, I'm working on an animation portfolio for submission next February. Today was my first free day of summer (as impossible as that sounds) so, after a journey to my local barber for a haircut only to find that the place was closed, I sat down in front of my new sketchpad.

Heavily stung by criticism from my brother that most of what I had done thus far was contained within a fictional universe of my own creations (the whole "An Alien's Galaxy" thing), I decided to start with something different today. Leafing through the recommendations of what to try, I paused on "Real-Life Observational Drawings."
Not exactly my strongest area, but I'd have to do something on it.
I looked out the window... And there stood the giant monkey puzzle tree that rests in our front garden (google for images, they look amazing).
Pencil went to paper... and three hours later, interrupted only by a brief computer session and dinner, voila!

I can't upload it right now, but it looks really good! Apart from doing not nearly as many branches as the actual tree, it is a faithful replication.
The only flaws are that it only covers half the page, some of the branches stick out in completely random directions, and a few spots look a bit iffy. But, other then that, it looks beautiful!
What I'm going to do is re-try this in two months time, then again two months after that. In the actual portfolio, I'll put all three observational drawings to show progression, plus a picture of the actual tree. Good idea, no?

Now what next...

Dragons, anyone?
