So, I recently borrowed a camera to take footage at FC and TFF. Grabbed a canon Vixia HV30 from work for FC and an HV20 from a friend for TFF. Now, few reasons why I moved on to video. The thing I've come to realize about photography is that my awesome shots will not be your awesome shots. Your eye will see something at a particular time that mine didn't. You'll be in the spot to get one particular shot, and I'll be in a shot to get another. I tend to think it's not a question of the better shot, it's a question of getting a shot that's better than the last shot you took.

Sure, I have gotten some great shots but I'm starting to feel the age of my gear. I feel like I'm racing NASCAR with a beat up 1980 Honda civic :P

But it isn't a race. A better analogy would what car gets you across the country. Some may make the journey easier, faster, and with more bells and whistles but you can still get there in the civic.

I'd still like to say if you're so worried about gear, it's not the megapizzixels that count, it's the composition, lighting, and the sort of digital enhancement you can do in post. I can spend up to an hour on an image in post, doing various enhancements in the RAW processing, and if that's still not enough, I'll fire up Elements. Honestly, the biggest difference between cameras aside from the megapixels (which you really only need if you're printing huge poster prints) is that their updated image processors take a lot of the work out of the post-processing, by doing things like noise reduction and color balance on-the-fly.

If you're still stuck on gear, then start renting. borrowlenses.com is local, and has extremely reasonable prices.

I'm not worried about megapixels but rather my camera body and lenses. I've got a really old kit lens that comparable to a dollar store product. The version 1 of the 18-55mm canon kit. Beyond that, my camera body has a sad buffer (6shot) which gets worse with raw (4shot). It's stuck with USB 1.1 as it's only interface, has a slow write speed (CF 10x) and is starting to exhibit problems with lens communication and other parts of the camera. Not to mention other less important shortcomings.

My D700 only has a (okay I can't find the number, because it's all arguments about memory card speed versus buffer size with all sorts of frame rate drops :P). I don't know what USB is supported in-camera, but it's so slow I always remove the CF card. It's not all sunshine and roses on the higher end. ;)

And just FYI, if you wanted to switch sides, I think Snowwolf has a Nikon D200 he's trying to get rid of.
