Videography rant and life update
So, I recently borrowed a camera to take footage at FC and TFF. Grabbed a canon Vixia HV30 from work for FC and an HV20 from a friend for TFF. Now, few reasons why I moved on to video. Out of a lot of my friends, I was one of the first to pounce on a DSLR, an old Canon 300D/Digital Rebel. Soon after, all my friends started getting newer cams (XSi, T2i, 60D) and the camera/photo rivalries began. As much as I loved shooting, I felt I couldn't keep up with the competition. I was using old gear, really old gear, had no money to upgrade, and felt I was falling behind everyone else. My second reason is that seeing all the BBF videos that are always so crazy amazing, I thought I'd give it a whack myself.
Soon after, I encountered a lot of problems. First off, good video gear isn't exactly cheap, nor is any of the accessories/recording meadia. On top of that, you need a fairly powerful computer to handle any kind of HD. Recording required a lot more work. Still photography requires capturing a single image at a given time. Video is moving images dealing with good camera control and how audio is captured as well as all the tidbits of still photography like exposure, etc. On top of all this, dumping the video to a comp, editing/post processing, then encoding is a big pain in the ass. Takes a long time, requires a lot of processing power, and if something screws up half way through a dump or encode, you get to start all over again, unlike photos where if you interrupt a 200 photo dump at 162, you can restart it at 162 without losing the first 161 photos. So, got the TFF fursuit parade done, Finally... gonna work on my backlog of FC stuff and then get the rest of TFF dumped soon. I'm also deciding to ditch video for now. I may get myself an old prosumer SD camera some time down the road just to play around but deciding to stick with photography for now and try to upgrade my camera/lenses. I'm looking to grab a 40D sometime soonish.
Beyond that, school is going good. The new suit is coming along, veeery slowly, but coming along. I was contemplating FWA but have decided to save my money for a vegas trip a week later with a few good friends instead of FWA, one reason due to the fact that the vegas trip is during spring break and I can road trip it for considerably cheaper. I'm finding myself in a good amount of debt again and have decided to cut back a lot. Less driving to events during the week especially since I have to leave early anyways. Also since gas is now close to $4 a gallon now. That means I'll be hitting chicken a lot less, spending fursuit nights at home by myself working, and more. This is all in an effort to get debts settled and paid off. I'm also in the market for a new job at SFO which should get me flight benefits and better pay. Beyond that, not much else going on. Looks like my next con will be Califur at this rate.
