I don't know how many of you still read this. Goodness knows, I have been excellent with my updates :P.
Anyway, I usually only write when I have something important to say.
I have made a huge decision, and what happens tommorow at 9:15 am will effect me the rest of my life
I have elected to shell out a little less than 4 grand to have LASIK surgery tommorow. Why do I want this procedure done, you ask? I have had glasses since I was 5 years old. My current vision is 20/800 or a -8.50 OU, (both eyes.) For all of you non optical friendly people, this means that, what I can see at 20 feet, a normal person who needs no correction can see that same view at 800 feet. I have the eyes of a 40 year old, sans the bifocals. If I had waited 2-3 more years to have this procedure, I would no longer be eligible for the surgery, (as I am allready considered "high risk" and "a challenge," with a lot of lasik centers refusing me because of my eyes.) This is because my eye is stretched like a football. 2-3 more years and I might as well just wait another 5 when I will require a corneal transplant. Anyway, not only does it have a 90% chance of correcting me to 20/40 (allowing you to drive with no need for glasses,) or better, but the procedure will also slow down the worsening and aging of my eyes, if not stop it completely. There is a 3-4% chance I will need additional touch-ups, because I am still young and my eyes are still changing 9_9. The good news is that at this time, I have plenty of tissue for 2 additional touch-ups and I am having the most expensive/top of the line Intralase and Allegretta Wave procedures done to help SAVE some of the tissue.
If you have glasses and/or this interests you in the least, I suggest you check out the information center at
http://www.hoopesvision.com/. This is also the clinic I am having it performed at, so if you live in Utah, I would highly reccomend scheduling a free screening. I went today for my pre-surgery appointment, and I must say that I was VERY impressed with the cleanliness of the office, and the extensive amount of information they give their patients. They spent 2 1/2 hours educating me and listening to my concerns. The doctor even comes in to visit with you the day before, (which is nice, and almost unheard of in large offices,)they really make you feel comfortable about the whole procedure.
I must say though, despite all that, I am nervous, (or is it anxious?) for tommorow. This will be a life altering change for me, (and yes, I am nervous that it might hurt :p) and I have never done well with big changes, be they good or bad. I have been so comfortable with having glasses for 16 years and being so dependent on them that they become a crutch and disability for me, that I will not know how to actwithout them. I will probably look up at the clock see each indivdual number, and then start crying, thinking what a miracle it is, and how lucky I am to live in a time when such technology is availible to fit my particular eye condition.
Plus, it is going to be a pain in the arse putting drops in every 10-15 min.
They are recording my surgery on to a dvd, (kinda freaky, huh?) So if anyone wants to see the procedure/is interested in it I would be happy to show them and answer any ?'s necessary.
I wont be able to tell you how it went tommorow, (no reading or computer work allowed after the first day :(.) but i should be online maybe fri or sat.
