Hohmigod, Vincent and the Doctor was super amazing! I don't know exactly why it was... it might have been watching it live and participating in the doctoreleven reaction post for the first time this series (or, you know, like, EVER), it might have been from reading the reaction post, and thus having an early, constant exposure to the pure fandom squee before being able to coherently form my own opinion, or it might have been something else. For some reason, I got the same vibe that I get when hearing about Pompeii. The weird, historical thrill of something old, but perfectly preserved. It made me want to find out more about Van Gogh, and sort of see his paintings in a new light.

All I knew about him before was that he painted some stuff that we looked at in art class, and cut off his ear to give to a prostitute or something. Our art classes were more about learning different styles and techniques than learning about the history of it all. In fact, art history was a threat our teacher used to get us to stop fooling around and focus on our assignments. It might have been different if we actually had the option of any arts ed classes beyond grade 9 (still bitter, btw).

It was wonderful acting on Matt Smith's part that throughout the episode, he constantly displayed pain about losing Rory, and about Amy's unknowing suffering. I loved how when Vincent and Amy were talking about their sadnessess, the shot was more focused on the Doctor, which was just brilliant. If Matt were a lesser actor, less able to show pain, and also showing that he was hiding that pain, the scene would have just been focused on the conversation, and would have been much less poignant.

Oh, Amy. I think I love you now. I've wanted to like you, and I have, at times. There have been a few 'Eff yeah! You're awesome!' moments, but none have stuck. I was waiting for the time when, like Romana II in The Creature from the Pit, I would realise that yes, this was indeed an awesome companion. I think I get you now, which is absolutely fantastic. Now, to get Rory back. I didn't know how much I wanted a multi-companion TARDIS until it was gone...
