This is a strange one. I dreamed that Sam and Dean were on this case where they learned that years ago 12 hunters had done some really terrible black magic in an attempt to stop this old being from waking. The old being wakes every 12 years or so demanding tribute. But instead of preventing it, they'd actually helped it along. This year was the anniversary of the ritual when the old being could not only rise again but break free of his need to be helped along by the twelve. This was also the only time the old being could be stopped by sacrificing the 12.
So the 12 decide they don't want to die and meet once again to pay tribute to their mistake. (I'm not sure exactly what they do, but I think it's something really terrible for the earth itself, like the old being leaches life from it or there's human sacrifice, I dunno, my brain didn't quite fill in all the details here). It gets even crazier because they're meeting in this futuristic looking hanger (which I know is because stupid Chicago was playing a stupid Jaws video game yesterday and he couldn't kill the giant squid which lived in an underwater hanger sea lab type of thing and he must have done the stupid level fifty stupid times before he finally beat the squid, anyway, I digress). And the 12 meet there in these robes with victorian masks.
Apparently Sam and Dean have "trapped" them there. I guess they meet at this place but they didn't know that Sam and Dean had rigged the entrance so no one could get out. Then Sam's on a walkway above looking down on them, shouting that it's over and they have to pay for their mistakes. But then Dean's not with him suddenly. Sam looks over the rail and Dean is down there with the 12. The old being has been summoned and is possessing part of the structure, like metals and coils (haha, like that stupid squid) wrapping around Dean. It's making Dean move like a puppet, controlling his limbs with jerky movements. Sam is horrified because unless he goes through with the plan, the old being will walk the earth free of the 12, but if he goes through with it Dean will now have to be sacrificed. Dean wasn't allowed to talk but I got the sense that he was trying to tell Sam it was okay, even though he was so terrified of dying and possibly going back to Hell.
I'm not 100% sure on how Dean got down there with the others, but when I questioned it in my hazy-about-to-wake-up state, my brain supplied that perhaps John Winchester was involved with this in some way and now that he's gone, his first born son must take his place. I also know that that makes a crazy loop hole 'cause there would have been 11 down there instead of 12 until Dean joins them, and I'm pretty sure that Sam can count, LOL, but it's a dream so whatever. I woke up when Sam was at his most horrified. I kind of got the sense that Sam wasn't going to be able to go through with it and the old being was set free.
crazy!
