How did Dumbledore defeat Grindelwald?

Well, 3 posts within 3 days, I must really like this pairing ...

Curious, how did Dumbledore manage to defeat Grindelwald?

The question part comes in that Grindelwald was the beholder of the Elder - aka Unbeatable - Wand, so how is it possible for Dumbledore to have dueled him and won; even given how gifted a wizard Dumbledore was.

It is said by Dumbledore that Grindelwald showed "remorse in later years", clearly insinuating that he didn't feel guilt for his actions at the time of the duel. From this, I think it's not too presumptuous to rule out that Grindelwald backed down in this aspect.

The sappy, romantic part of me sees some hope that Grindelwald had simply surrendered himself at the end, unwilling to hurt/kill Dumbledore. What do you think?

(I'm sorry if this has already been discussed before -_-...)
