Leonardo's character was obviously dreaming.
- Ariadne is a character in Greek mythology that leads Theseus out of the labyrinth using red thread. Ellen Page wore red for the entire film. Just sayin. My personal belief is that Leonardo was in limbo and she was sent in to bring him out, but failed.
- In the last scene the children look exactly like he has imagined them over and over, down to their clothes, even though the storyline would place him out of their presence for at LEAST one full day (real time) regardless of how you interpret the dream sequencing.
- In the "Dream Den" the overseer says to Leonardo "They come here to wake up, you of all people should know that". This is not the most compelling point, but it is a bit of an overstep for that man to have taken with a perfect stranger.
I think the point is training yourself to adjust your own reality. Just like in real life, pay attention to what is strange. Don't let your mind ignore things you know are out of place.
