Summary: Jonghyun loves to talk. Jinki hasn't said a word since he was a little boy. Jonghyun is determined to change that by whatever means necessary, even if that means singing to Jinki everyday.
Jonghyun wonders what it's like and how difficult it must be to be trapped within the confines of one's own mind, always thinking but forever unable to voice even the simplest of opinions. Prisoner to your own thoughts and silent dreams.
He wonders what it's like to be Lee Jinki, the boy next door who hasn't said one word to anyone in the last 14 years.
How difficult must it be to remain silent, even in the face of impending doom? To keep all your opinions to yourself? Extremely hard, Jonghyun assumes. He's never had to do that. He couldn't even begin to imagine being mute. The very thought sent a cold shiver up his spine. Kim Jonghyun never stayed silent when something was on his mind. He always voiced his thoughts, loud and proud.
Because that's who he is and that's exactly why he finds himself sitting in front of Lee Jinki, his mute neighbor. Even if it was the last thing he did, Kim Jonghyun was going to make Lee Jinki talk to him. No matter how hard or how long. It was going to happen damnit and Jonghyun was going to be there when it did.
Jonghyun would be there, smiling like a proud father, when Lee Jinki said his first word in 14 years. Scouts honor. He swore on his prized collection of Wheesung CDs. He was going to be there when the unthinkable happened. Nothing that monumental was going to happen without him. Not in a million years. No sir.
It was promise Jonghyun made to himself and to Jinki, one that he was going to keep even if it killed him. Even if his friends told him he couldn't.
"He's a freak Jjong. He hasn't said a word to anyone since he was FIVE." Kibum points all this out one afternoon while they're standing in line at the cafeteria.
Jonghyun simply smiles and shrugs. "He's traumatized Bum-ah, not a freak. Besides, I hang out with you don't I?"
Kibum smacks him on the shoulder and scowls. "Shut up. What makes you think he's gonna talk to you anyway?"
Jonghyun only smiles brightly and winks at his friend. "Because. I have a way with people."
Kibum snorts into his juice carton and guffaws as Jonghyun walks away to join Jinki outside. “You do NOT!”
Beneath the tree in the yard Jinki has his nose buried in a book, humming softly to no-one in particular. Jonghyun smiles and settles down next to him, handing Jinki a juice box. He smiles at Jonghyun and sips on the cool beverage happily.
Jonghyun peers curiously at the book his companion seems so interested in and smiles when he sees the scribbled notes in the margins. Jinki’s been trying to decipher one of his song books again. “Want some help?”
Jinki nods and smiles brightly, handing the book over to Jonghyun. His head comes to rest on the smaller boy’s soft lap and he closes his eyes, listening quietly as Jonghyun sings one of his favorite songs.
When you're tired and exhausted, lean on me
I will always be by your side
So that you never feel like you're alone in this world,
I'll be right beside you, holding your hand.
Something about the way Jonghyun sings reminds Jinki of his late father, and the way Jonghyun smiles when Jinki does something silly reminds him of his late mother. Jonghyun serves as a reminder to Jinki that not everything in the world is bad. He is the bright spot in Jinki’s life.
In a way, he gives Jinki the confidence to go out and explore the world. Before they met, Jinki went straight home after school and opted to stay in on the weekends, seeking refuge in his collection of books and computer games. But ever since Jonghyun stumbled into his life, Jinki finds himself wanting to explore more of the outside world. He wants to see what Jonghyun sees, feel what Jonghyun feels, taste what Jonghyun tastes, and hear what Jonghyun hears. He wants to understand what aspect of the world Jonghyun knows that he doesn’t. Wants to understand what it is that makes Jonghyun smile all the time.
So he goes wherever Jonghyun goes, eats whatever Jonghyun eats, and drinks whatever Jonghyun drinks. He does everything Jonghyun does, down to the tee. And while other people might find it slightly annoying, Jonghyun finds it incredibly adorable. He likes teasing Jinki about it and seeing the bright shade of red that stains the boy’s cheeks.
Because to Jonghyun, Jinki is the one part of the vast world he has yet to explore. He wants to understand what makes Jinki tick, just like Jinki wants to understand him. He wants to understand why Jinki isolates himself from everything. Wants to know why Jinki refused to set foot into the outside world until they found each other. He can’t understand, but he wants to. And he would trade everything in a heartbeat just to hear Jinki speak.
Together they help each other make sense of the world around them. Jonghyun helps Jinki try new things, and Jinki lets Jonghyun a little deeper into his world. Jonghyun’s friends love to tease them about their relationship, especially Kibum, but Jonghyun doesn’t care because Jinki is a special part of his world.
Finally, the school bell rings and the two boys dust themselves off. Jonghyun drapes his arm lazily over Jinki’s shoulder and Jinki clutches his book to his chest as they make their way back to the main campus. Both boys smile happily as they walk down the hill together. Jonghyun’s friends join them and together the five friends enter the school. Jinki laughs at a silly joke Kibum cracks and Jonghyun grins happily.
He watches Jinki interact with his friends, marveling at how far Jinki has come since they first met. He knows it may be awhile before Jinki talks, it could be months, or years later down the road. He knows that it may never happen. But Jonghyun doesn’t care, doesn’t mind waiting. Because he knows that it will happen someday. And when it does, he’ll be there.
Kim Jonghyun will be there for Lee Jinki’s grandest moment. That’s one promise he’s going to keep.
