They drove in silence for nearly two days straight before finally stopping at a motel, one where there was no sign of anything weird or off. Dean went to get them a room while Sam grabbed their stuff. All they wanted was a night to forget and maybe get a few hours of sleep before continuing to Bobby’s.

But their life has always been full of surprises.

When the brothers entered their room, they found not one, but two angels.

Gabriel was reclining on one of the beds, his wings visible, one folded to his side while the other blanketed an unconscious Castiel, who was lying against his chest.

“What the…”

“Articulate as always, Dean.”

Neither of the boys could move at first, frozen in shock. “But…how? I thought Lucifer killed you,” Sam said.

Gabriel rolled his eyes. “Why is it that everyone continues to underestimate me? He knows most of my tricks, hell, he taught me most of them. So instead, I made him think I was tricking him.”

“So you tricked him into thinking you tricked him?”

“Bingo. He just killed the copy. He did get my blade though…”

They finally managed to move, Dean to sit on the empty bed and Sam to the desk chair.

Dean stared at Castiel. “Is he…is he going to be okay?”

Gabriel looked down at his little brother. “Physically he should be fine. That wasn’t the kind of wound that an angel can heal on their own, though. Gotta keep him close of a few more hours so my Grace can help.”

“You said physically…” Sam mused.

“Well, the fact that he even considered doing something that stupid does not bode well for his mental state.”

Dean looked at the floor. “That’s my fault.”

“Damn straight it is.” Gabriel’s wing tightened protectively around Castiel. “And you ever hurt him like that again, I will smite you.”

Dean stood up to take a better look at the sleeping angel. He gently placed a kiss onto Castiel’s forehead, being careful of the wing.

They fell quiet for awhile, each in their own thoughts. Finally Dean spoke up. “I’m going down to that diner a few miles back. Want anything?”

“Just grab me a salad.”

“Grab me some pie, will ya?” Gabriel added.

“Yeah, sure. I’ll be back in awhile.”

Once Dean had left, Sam moved and sat on the bed at Gabriel’s free side. The folded wing spread and then covered the young Winchester. Sam played with one of the black feathers. “Are you okay?” Sam finally asked. He knew the archangel had been through a lot. He had lost most of his surrogate of pagan gods, and then finally picked the side that pitted him against the rest of his siblings.

Gabriel shrugged. “Not really, but what can you do? Except, you know, maybe save the world.”

“Yeah.” Sam rested his head against Gabriel’s chest. “I’m glad you’re alive,” he muttered.
“Gabriel pressed a kiss into Sam’s hair. “Me, too, kiddo,” he whispered.

“You’re comfy. I’m just gonna sleep here, kay?”

Gabriel tightened wrapped an arm around Sam and tightened his wing in response. “Sleep as long as you need. I’m not going anywhere soon.”

And he knew that for once, he really meant it.
