Read this short story
I once wrote an FMA fic that was inspired by a Margaret Atwood story, but at the time I couldn't remember the title. I asked dien to remind me, since she had shown me the story, but I don't think I posted about it. I found it again in a lit anthology and I think everyone should read it--because not only is it fun, it's meta-y!:

For the curious, Margaret Atwood is a novelist. Her most well known work is, I believe, The Handmaid's Tale, which is a sad book. I ranted about it at one point, some of you may remember. Likewise, The Blind Assassin and Oryx and Crake are pretty somber and/or depressing books.
