Father and Son talks

Jul 19, 2009 19:27

The fight had happened four days ago now, and it was Monday. Ben was due to be at work, but the last place he wanted to be was with his father. He figured that his leaving home was in effect his big I quit anyway. Sarah, however, had to go off with the girls shopping at the mall for clothes for school. She dragged Ben along, but once the girls ( Read more... )

Dean had meant what he said when he said that things had gone on long enough. There was only so long that Dean was going to let Ben do that to Lisa, and four days was well past the limit. He'd put up with it so long as he knew that Ben was safe, and he was taking Alec's word on that one, but now he needed to smack some sense into his eldest and get him to start acting more like a seventeen year-old as oppose to a seven year-old.

He used the GPS on Ben's phone to track him down, and once he was in the mall it didn't take him long to spot him in Starbucks. Sliding his hands in his pockets, he made his way over, standing next to him for a moment before kicking the side of the couch lightly to get his son's attention.

"What the...?" Ben put the book down and looked up angerily, then groaned and shut his eyes.

"What do you want?"

"You need to stop this and come home," Dean said firmly, giving his son a look that said he was done screwing around. He was his father, whether Ben liked it or not.

"Right now I'm busy." He pointed to the bags of clothing that were obviously not his unless he was becoming a cross dresser.

He gave Dean back a look that if anything, Dean had seen before. It was his face, but the look that Sam always gave John growing up when he felt that John was being unreasonable and overbearing.

Dean looked down at the bags, before looking up at his son again. "Do you know how much your mother's been worried about you? You're scaring the hell out of her, and she doesn't deserve that. Not from anyone, and especially not from you."

He just shrugged, picking up his book again. Easier to ignore Dean if he couldn't see him.

"Yeah, well she's got Alec and Sammy. They can be her perfect little children that she wants."

Dean watched that for a moment, before reaching forward and grabbing Ben's book in his hands. He slid a finger between the pages to hold his place, but otherwise, the book was out of his hands.

"I don't care if you're pissed at me, or pissed at both of us. She's your mother. You show her some damn respect. You don't get to be ass to her when you were the one who made the stupid choice."

"And I admitted it. And you both act like you've never done a stupid thing before in your entire lives and that I'm a stupid kid who can't take care of himself. I'm seventeen, Dean. I'm not a stupid eight year old anymore, and maybe if you stopped treating me like one, you'd see that I'm not acting like one. I haven't in years."

Ben snatched his book back, not caring about the spot. He could find it. He got up, shoving it into a pocket and then grabbed Sarah's bags so he could go find her and get away from his father.

"Oh, really?" Dean reached over and grabbed his son's arm, turning him to face him again. "So storming out, running away from home, doing this passive aggressive bullshit, you think that's really acting like an adult?"

"What do you want me to do? Go sit in my room and pout while listening to Linkin' Park and refuse to eat dinner until my mother comes in and tried to talk to me and make me feel better?"

Ben firmed his jaw, wrenching his arm free. "You're the one who's forcing me to make a scene here, not me. I'll come home when I'm ready to come home. Can't go far, since you've got my only ticket out of here locked up in the garage anyway."

"I want you to realize that there are consequences for the things you do. Some bigger than others. And yes, I get that you were 'careful' but there isn't being careful when you're drunk. I know why you're pissed, but if you had been caught, it would have been a lot worse. Be grateful you didn't get stopped by a cop and arrested."

Dean let him go, before looking back at his son. "Fine. Stay out as long as you want. Get gone for all I care. But at least give your mother a friggin' phone call and let her know you're still in one piece."

Get gone for all I care.

Those words there hit Ben hard and he lowered his head, the pain from those filling him for just that moment before he took a deep breath.

"So that's really what you do when you can't handle something, isn't it? First uncle Sam, and now me? You can tell Mom that I'm fine; and you want me gone, fine. I'll stay gone, but remember it's you who said that."

He turned to go, and when he wasn't facing Dean he could feel his strength just going away and he forced himself to just start to walk even if he felt like just crumbling in that spot.

Dean closed his eyes, knowing that he had let his temper get the better of him, yet again. He really wanted to punch something, but now wasn't really the place to do it. Now, he had to go home and explain to Lisa how he had fucked this up, probably worse than he already had, and that was not going to be an easy thing.

The thing was, he knew that that wasn't what he had done with Sam. He knew that Ben didn't know that, but he didn't know how he could do it. How he could fix it. How he could explain it in a way that wouldn't freak the hell out of his kids. So instead of trying to correct Ben, he just swallowed it and walked away, hoping that eventually Ben would cool off and come home again.

Lisa was waiting at home, in the kitchen cooking. Dean had said he was going to find Ben and bring him home, and Lisa was cooking Ben's favorite meal. She wasn't sure but felt that if Ben saw her doing that he would know that she did still love him and wanted him.

When she heard the Impala pull back into the driveway, she washed her hands and made her way to the livingroom so she could hug the hell out of her son.

Dean looked up at her as he came in, and his eyes darted back down to the ground. He knew he screwed up, and he knew what she was expecting, and he couldn't stand disappointing her right now. Instead, he just rubbed the back of his neck lightly before responding.

"I'm sorry."

"Sorry?" She looked past him, then realized just how Dean was standing and she took a step closer. "Dean, where's Ben? You said you were bringing him home."
