long time no talk... bliz122122 February 26 2007, 14:13:25 UTC
Hey Sarah,
Hope you're doing well. I'm in the teaching world as well now, teaching English in Japan. Anyway, your post caught my eye and I thought I'd give some suggestions of my own. Some are a little more science-y, because I'm a huge dork, but maybe you'd like them too.

-Shogun (James Clavell) if you're interested in a 1000+ page tome. An amazing epic novel!
-Special Topics in Calamity Physics (Marisha Pessl) if you're interested in a book that's written in a fast-paced language, a la Gilmore Girls, but nothing like the subject matter of GG or Physics for that matter.
-The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (Mark Hadden or haddon, can't remember)
-The Time Traveler's Wife. slow start, but good book.
-Middlesex
-Please, Mr. Einstein (Jean-Claude Carriere)
-The Echo Maker (Richard Powers)
-On Food and Cooking (Harold McGee) if you're interested in science in the kitchen.
-The Zero (Jess Walter)

I haven't read the last four, but they're definitely on my to-read list. I envy you and your reading time. You might even read some of these books before me if you decide to invest in them.
Anyway, happy reading!
~Adam
