"He thinks the compass is an eight-day clock."

How do I feel about Congressional attempts to phase out incandescent bulbs in favour of supposedly "greener" compact fluorescent bulbs? So far, I think stardustgirl has said it best already:

Fluorescent is not inviting. Fluorescent is Wal-Mart. It's the hospital waiting room at 3 a.m. It's the endless afternoon in school where you're stuck in a concrete box ( Read more... )

The current leader of Germany was asked why she doesn't advocate the use of those compact fluorescents, and her response was, "Because I like to see what I'm doing."

Wait, there's Asia Argento porn?

Why did my staff not notify me of this?

Everyone's fired.

I think Asia Argento automatically makes anything porn. ;-)

Well, since I can't get more fired, chris_walsh December 20 2007, 18:02:05 UTC
I just had a weird, possibly horrible thought: You think Asia Argento could pull off a performance as Courtney Love?

Aw, nuts. I'm not going to start with the "But it works well for me" whine, but I have to admit that I much prefer compact fluorescent lighting over incandescent light. Of course, I also get physically sick from the yellows and oranges of sunsets, too, so I suspect that I have the same problem with yellow and red light that John Lydon has. That's why I'm not whining and in fact sympathize: if the light isn't working for you, then it's time to see what does.

On a brighter point, all of that horticultural research of mine has led to a few possibilities that might help. LED bulbs are coming down in price even as I write this, and a system that currently costs $150 will probably be less than $20 by the end of next year. Not only are these more energy-conscious, but they come in full-spectrum and grow-light varieties as well. I'm buying a couple for converting an old Nineties-era iMac into a vivarium, and if you're interested, I'd be glad to pass on any purchasing information.

Okay. That's an awesome idea. It just so happens I have on old iMac monitor lying around...

I'm going to start work on it this Sunday (I'm going in to work with the Czarina on Sunday so she has someone to talk to at the jewelry store, and I'll be tearing that iMac apart as she's working on her mother's Saturnalia present), and I'll be posting pictures of the process over at txtriffidranch. If it really works out well, I might return to writing just long enough to do an article for Make on the subject. Then I take what I've learned and use it on a dead 30-inch monitor I scavenged at work.

If you have a moment I'd love to hear maybe a top-five list of Aisa movies that delivers on the Porn angle. I have seen so few of her movies that I bet I have missed quite a number of good ones. She should be included in the dictionary as a definition of sexy.

Well, keeping in mind that what I consider porn is different from what most people consider porn, I'll think on this.

i remember reading a study way back about the correlation between fluorescent lighting and depression. it's actually an interesting idea for a horror story: a world lit by nothing other than fluorescent lighting. ugh.

no sunshine, no nothing...just nuclear winter + fluorescent lighting. *crawls under desk*
