Comments are nice.
I think I am going to begin a ruthless campaign to supplant the cretinous "om nom nom" (and all imaginable fucking variants) with the respectable Yiddish nosh. Which, of course, people have been using for ages to mean exactly what people now seem unable to express without turning to the Cookie Monster and baby talk.
The trip was good. But yesterday morning we were at Pier 51 (Hudson River Park) and I fell. I woke up this morning very much feeling as if I'd fallen. Only one visible bruise, but lots and lots of sore muscles. But, otherwise, the trip was, in the main, quite nice. I'm not sure if I'm in the mood to write about the trip. Too many other things on my mind, and these days travelogues bore me.
High points: Not long after we arrived on Wednesday, we stopped by
Obscura Antiques & Oddities, as seen on the Science Channel series Oddities. I bought the shell of an adult male red-eared slider (
Trachemys scripta elegans), and Evan Michelson rang me up. That was cool. Kathryn and I arrived at KGB about sunset, and the reading went marvelously. You can
see Ellen Datlow's photos here. Kathryn didn't take any during the actual reading. I waited until the very last minute to decide what I was reading, and chose "Daughter Dear Desmodus." It's a very short piece, which left me with a few minutes to spare. So, afterwards, I borrowed a copy of
The Drowning Girl: A Memoir from
J. Daniel Stone and read a snippet from "7/7/7." Thanks, Daniel.
Michael Cisco read next, from his new novel, Member. Then there was dinner at Grand Sichuan on St. Mark's. Marvelous food, and we managed to consume the meat of six different animals in a single meal: shrimp, fish, chicken, duck, beef, and pork. But the best dish - by far - was the double-cooked pork belly with chestnuts. Damn fine pig. Oh, and walking from KGB to the restaurant, we encountered
Philip Glass.
And...maybe I'll write more about the trip tomorrow. Maybe I'll feel better then. But I will leave you with these photos, a rather random assortment. There will be more photos tomorrow:
