Long live rock: The Who set to play Super Bowl XLIV halftime (NFL website)
THE WHO, one of the world's greatest and most dynamic rock and roll bands, will perform in the BRIDGESTONE SUPER BOWL XLIV HALFTIME SHOW on CBS Sports at Dolphin Stadium in South Florida on Sunday, February 7, the NFL announced Thursday during halftime of the Oakland Raiders-Dallas Cowboys game on CBS.
nice!
admittedly, the who are now a contradictory band.
this is the same band that in their song "my generation" sang:
.. i hope i die before i get old ..
so i'm sure they don't think that way anymore. \-:
i worry about roger daltrey's voice not being what it used to be, but these guys know rock & roll.
Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child named best guitar riff of all time (telegraph.co.uk)
Late guitar guru Hendrix, who topped the singles chart with the track in 1970, triumphed in a poll of musicians.
The track - full title Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - edged past Guns N'Roses song Sweet Child O'Mine which finished second in the poll by musicians' website MusicRadar.com.
admittedly, i'm just surprised that Guns N'Roses made it that far. as for more surprises:
2. Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
7. Metallica - Enter Sandman
8. The Beatles - Day Tripper
9. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
11. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
16. AC/DC - Highway to Hell
20. Michael Jackson - Beat It
i would never have thought of those as "guitar songs." in contrast, there are a few gems that did make it:
15. The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
19. Led Zeppelin - Black Dog
"black dog" is an intense song. it starts off one of the best known albums of all time, led zeppelin iv ("zofo") and the remainder of the album does not relent. i cannot listen to that song without feeling the guitar in my gut.
as for "7 nation army," it is best heard through speakers with good base, because the vibrations are important. this is a guttural song. my only regret is that the title of the song is not what i thought it was. if you believe
wikipedia,
According to White, "Seven Nation Army" was what he used to call the Salvation Army as a child.
somehow, that sits wrong with me.
what i would like it to mean is the greek legend of "
seven against thebes." the army raised by
Polynices was formed of seven allied nations against the doomed city of thebes, the once-kingdom of
oedipus.
[1]. as for why seven, legend has it that thebes had seven gates; apparently it wasn't bad military strategy ..
.. never mind the fact that eteocles and polynices ended up killing each other, which leads to the story of
antigone.
ah, family drama ..
[1] put one way, oedipus is likely the most famous
motherf-cker ever known in the western tradition. q-:
