New Year's Principles.

Jan 01, 2007 00:00

yes, i am getting started on an early batch of these, this year ..

.. and no, i don't believe in new year's resolutions, because once a resolution is broken, it is worthless. but a principle is flexible; as long as one adopts the rule most of the time, then it may still hold true.

anyways, i'm updating this list until 2007, and the plan is to keep it short and easy to follow. i also have this tendency to throw a few easy ones (so that i don't feel overwhelmed) as well as one or two impossible ones (because i probably won't be able to keep all of them, regardless of ease).

i will also avoid numbering them, to avoid undue importance to a single goal.

new year's principles (thus far)
  • keep my cell phone ringer on more often,
and call friends and family more often.

  • exercise regularly;
do not use research as an excuse not to take time for exercise!

  • avoid getting convicted and executed for treason against the u.s. gov't.

  • cook more regularly,
and pack a lunch more often.

  • prove the riemann hypothesis (in less than 20 pages of LaTeX).

  • plant many trees, in order to balance paper-wasting karma (from teaching).

  • endeavor to go on a date .. or at least, not actively stop a date from happening.

  • go vegetarian for a while -- both cooking and eating out.

  • (NEW.) drink less coffee, more tea.

  • (NEW.) relearn how to communicate in spanish, maybe learn to be literate in chinese.

  • (NEWER.) convert my laptop prospero into a dual-boot computer (windox xp & ubuntu linux).

on wednesday class, i suggested to my students a general principle on how to construct basic ODEs to suit particular models. then somehow i went off a tangent and mentioned this difference between new year's principles and resolutions, and how last year i made my "do not gain more than 100 lbs" principle and succeeded.

they actually laughed.
fancy that.

i was tempted to add a few other new year's principles out of anger and spite, but thought better of them. certain things are not worth writing down.

new years
