Well... I just replaced my 7" Kindle Fire with a 10". I never put them online. I only transfer files from the laptop to the Kindle. It's drag and drop. I use a text app that shows only plain text when I'm reading. I do not use Amazon services for Kindle. If I buy the once a year book from Amazon, I download it to my laptop and then transfer it manually to the Kindle. I love the Kindle for reading but I don't need Amazon touching my stuff.
I replaced the 7" after six years. It finally stopped charging. I bought a used 10" Fire on ebay for $30, including shipping. Had it for about six months and it's great. It's not on the wifi, of course. I merely transferred everything including the entire Proslib library to it. I have never had a Nook or anything else. All ereaders are very proprietary from what I read when looking for a new one so I stuck with Kindle. Good luck!
I want to kick myself for turning on the WiFi. I should have known better. I've always used it like you described but sometimes I forget and do something stupid. The odd thing is while the side-loaded books don't show up in the library, they're there when I look at the fire content on my computer. I just can't access them on the Kindle. It's maddening.
I've managed to transfer a few books to my android tablet. If all else fails, when I want to read a book, I can use the tablet. It's not ideal, but it'll be okay until I decide what reader I want to use next. I think I've narrowed it down to either a Pocketbook or a Kobo. They're expensive so I need to do some more research about what would suit me the best.
