eReaders Recs Please

I need a new eReader pronto. What's your suggestion other than a Kindle? Pretty please. I need a new one as soon as possible.

Amazon sucks. I've got two kindles. One is older and has issues like not letting me load new books, but I can use it for reading fanfic on the web. It's also got an amazing battery life. The second is a newer Kindle Fire 7" and its battery needs recharging A LOT and that's if I don't turn on the wifi. If I do turn it on, I have to charge it after nearly ever reading session. Even if it's just sitting on the shelf, the battery still drains quickly.

I rarely buy an Amazon kindle book, but I do download books to my computer from other sources, free and paid for from different sites. I side-load books from the laptop onto the newer Kindle and read from there.

Now here comes the big problem that happened last night. I made the mistake of turning on my wifi on the Fire 7" and forgot to turn it off while I charged it. When I went to turn it on and look for a book, it had been updated and ALL the books I'd side-loaded were gone!!!!!!!! Just wiped, poof, gone for good. The fanfic that I'd downloaded was still there, but that was it. It wasn't in the cloud, my library or anywhere. Thankfully, I have them on my computer, but WTF????

So, that's why I'm asking for recommendations. I've got hundreds of books I've collected over the years, a lot of classics in particular, and I'd love to be able to read them without worrying about Amazon stealing them from my personal device, especially since about half are paid and the others from free sites around the web.

ereader, personal
