It's been a difficult few weeks. A friend of mine died last week after a her kidneys failed and she refused dialysis. I'd known Carol for over thirty years, so it was difficult to watch her fade away like that. Carol was the person who threw me a surprise party when I turned forty. She drove me to the hospital when I was having chest pains that turned out to be a heart attack. Carol was the kind of person who'd do anything for you if she could.
Carol was 82 and her husband of 53 years died suddenly last year of a heart attack in April. Since then she'd been slipping both physically and mentally. She'd lost a lot of weight that she really couldn't afford to lose. Then when her kidneys failed, she tried dialysis for a short period of time, but hated it. A few weeks ago she got pneumonia, went into the hospital where she had two strokes in less than a week. She could talk and knew what was going on, but just decided that enough was enough. Her son respected her wishes.
Her funeral is this Friday. I'm not looking forward to it. It's hard to lose people anytime, but when they've been in your life for so long, it's like losing family.
