look on my works, ye mighty, and despair

I have been so completely Quatrro'd by the latest episode of The Thick of It that I don't honestly know what to say about it, except that over the course of the season, it's gone from being one of the finest comedies I've ever seen to one of the greatest television shows I've ever seen, full stop. There's a fine, fine line between comedy, satire, and drama, and I've always admired shows that are able to shift between those things, but I've never seen anything that so thoroughly destroyed that line as this show.

The wrongness of Malcolm's firing was so acute that I nearly felt sick. The moment when Steve Fleming (who bears really far too strong a resemblance to David Axelrod than I'm really comfortable with) takes Malcolm's Blackberry away, I think my heart broke a little bit.

Of course, I think Steve Fleming is an abomination who must be destroyed, but on this show, Malcolm making an Epic Comeback is in no way certain (though likely), and even if he does, the Government is still entirely screwed, so who knows.

And naturally, the only character who truly sees the no bad wrong of Malcolm's sacking is Nicola, who's now entirely defenseless save her own inept little crew. I think her heart broke a little when she fled that meeting, honestly, and that very complex look of pain on her face while the rest of them are celebrating spoke volumes.

("I'm only a Cabinet Minister!" Aaaand that would be the part when my heart completely shattered. Jesus, Nicola.)

So. Next week. Epicness will be had.
