~*~Previous chapter~*~ Reita was just coming back from the hospital, he heard the phone ring while he was opening the doors and rushed in mumbling “Don’t hang up, don’t hang up!”
Not like the person calling him would give up so easily. It was the doctor, “I thought you would be home a while ago so I didn’t call your cell phone.”
“Bad traffic. Is everything ok?”
“In a way. You need to come back here. It seems Saga has gone into labor.”
He almost fainted, his knees felt weak, panicked, he yelled, “How, I was there like half an hour ago? Is it bad?”
“Just come here now, he will be fine, babies don’t just pop out.”
“Alright! I’m on my way!”
Reita rushed back out of the apartment and into the car. This was it, it was time. He did think the doctor was postponing the delivery too long. Saga has gone into the 39th week, but seeing how he and the baby were both doing well they have decided to wait. He cursed the traffic.

Saga seemed in a sort of trance when the doctor walked into the room.
“I called Reita, he’ll be here soon.”
Saga nodded. “Can we wait for him?”
“Yes we can. But we will prep you just in case. We have time and you are already in a hospital. Babies aren’t really so fast to come out as it’s portrayed in movies.”
Saga made a nervous smile. “I guess.”
“You’ve only just gone into labor. Your contractions are still very far apart and not too painful I believe.”
“They are painful enough!” Saga just felt a new one coming on. He threw his head back and whimpered.
“It’s alright. Just relax and breathe.” The doctor sat by Saga’s side and swiped a few strands of hair from his face. “The contractions will only become bad in your case if we wait to long.”
After a while a nurse and a young doctor walked in the room. They had a wheel chair with them.
The doctor got up and took Saga’s hand, “Come on, and steady now. These two will get you to the operating room and help prep you.”
He helped Saga get up and to the chair. “But I want to wait for Reita.”
“Don’t argue with me. Reita will be here shortly and I want you on the table as soon as possible.”
He nodded to the young doctor and he pushed Saga out of the room quickly followed by the nurse. He went to meet Reita, hoping it wouldn’t take him very long to get there. And it didn’t. Reita had luck on his side while driving back to the clinic.
They met at the entrance.
“Good, you made it back quickly. I’ll let you in on what happened since you left while we walk.”
Reita nodded and followed after the doctor.
“After you left I went to check on Saga before I go home. It was pure luck I was there, the amniotic sac ruptured and Saga panicked, not that I can blame him. Poor boy, he just got up to stretch hid legs a bit.”
Reita panted, “Amni- what?”
“Rupture of the amniotic sac, also called breaking of the water. It’s part of the placenta. Amniotic fluid is what keeps the baby comfy in the womb. When the sac ruptures the fluid comes out and the labor starts. But in some cases it doesn’t have to be that way. All you need to know is that it’s perfectly normal.”
“Alright. Where is Saga? Is he alright?”
“He is right where we are going now. Straight to the operating room. He is being prepared.”
“Is he in pain?”
“As to be expected, but don’t worry, right now they are giving him the best pain killers in the world, the regional anaesthesia. He said he wants to be awake for the delivery.” At that the doctor looked questioningly at Reita.
“Yes, he told me that.”
“So I guess you will be joining us for the delivery?”
Reita breathed, as much as he hated blood, hospitals and the idea of attending an operation he really wanted to be with Saga. Unlike him, he didn’t have such a hard time during this pregnancy. All he could do was to observe and support Saga through the whole ordeal. He knew it was only right to gather himself together and take at least this bullet.
“Yes, I will be there.”
The doctor smiled, “You don’t have to watch the whole procedure, only if you want to. I’m sure Saga just wants you by his side because he is frightened.”
“Good, I really don’t want to see the whole cutting and opening.” Reita shuddered at the mere thought.
They walked into a small room, on one wall there was a window that showed into the operating room. Through it he saw Saga was already on the table, but was on his side.
“He is being given an epidural. It’s the anesthesia.” Doctor answered Reita’s confused look. “This nurse will help you prepare.” He directed Reita’s attention to the woman holding in her hands some folded blue material. He was too distracted to think about her too much, but he still nodded like he knew exactly what was going on.
The nurse spoke with the doctor, “Anesthesiologist started the epidural, and the doctor has inserted the catheter. I started his IV drip.” She was helping Reita change into the blue sterile clothing; the doctor didn’t need help like he did.
Another doctor walked in and started getting ready; he greeted his older colleague and asked who Reita was.
“This is the father, he will be joining us.”
The other doctor smiled. “So you have the stomach to go thorough with this?”
But Reita was still awkwardly dancing with the nurse who guided him to wash his hands and was wrapping him and tie him up. “Well, not really.”
“Reita will stay with us through the whole procedure, but he will be with the patient behind the screen. I’m ready. Nurse sent the father in when you’re done with him.” He walked into the operating room.
Saga was pretty much ready; doctor approached him and smiled behind the mask. “Reita is here, the nurse is helping him change and he will be in with you shortly. How are you feeling? Are the anesthetics kicking in?”
Saga nodded, “I’m scared. Is everything going to be alright?”
“Yes. I’ll tell you what we are going to do. You are all set, as soon as my colleague gets ready and we are sure you are completely numb we can start. You probably didn’t feel this and you can’t see it because of the screen, but that nurse there has swabbed your belly with antiseptic. There will be three nurses, three doctors and an anesthesiologist here so you have nothing to worry about. We will make a small, horizontal incision in the skin above your pubic bone. Then go through layer by layer of the underlying tissue, manually separate your abdominal muscles. When we reach the uterus we make a horizontal cut in the lower section. Then we reach in and pull your baby out.”
Saga smiled but still looked scared out of his mind. He didn’t hear when Reita walked in, but some of the fear seemed to be erased from his features when Reita came to him.
“Hey there honey. You could have started this while I was still here, like 15 minutes earlier.” He smiled and took Saga’s hand. He to was terrified, but tried his best to hide it.
“Sorry, not my call.” He smiled lovingly at Reita.
“How are you feeling?”
Saga held Reita’s hand as tightly as he could, but he was a bit drowsy. “Nervous. I can’t believe it’s time.”
The doctor spoke, “And it is, now that we are all here.”
The final member of the team, the doctor Reita met in the prep room, came in.
“Alright, Saga I will finish what I started explaining to you. When we pull the baby out you will see her only briefly before I hand her to the pediatrician.” He pointed at the doctor who came in last. “While he examines her, this doctor and I will still work on you, one of us will stitch you up. That takes longer then the rest of the procedure. But as soon as the pediatrician is done examining your baby the nurse will hand her over to Reita and you two can admire her while we finish up.”
Reita grinned when doctor said he will hold his baby girl, it will be so soon. Saga was smiling and he looked up at Reita and spoke quietly, “This is it.”
“Yes it is.” He lifted Saga’s hand and kissed it through the mask. “I called your dad and my mom, they are on the way. And I called Uruha, so I imagine that by now everyone is informed.”
Saga smiled, “Thank you, for being here.” Two tears rolled out of his eyes.
“Hey, don’t cry. Everything will be alright.” Reita wiped his tears.
“I know. I know it will.” Saga nodded.
The doctors got to work. One nurse was monitoring Saga’s and baby’s heart beats and Saga’s blood pressure. The anesthesiologist was there ready to put Saga under general anesthesia if something went wrong. One nurse was helping the two doctors operating on Saga, and the other stood by with pediatrician, waiting.
Reita kept kissing Saga’s hand and comfort him. “I love you Saga. Thank you for all this. Thank you for not aborting and going through all this. You are so much braver then I could ever be.”
Saga still let silent tears roll down his face; he was touched by Reita’s words. He was grateful, that Reita accepted him and their child. That he no longer needed to hide, that he has his own family.
Soon enough, neither of them could tell how long it took, they heard the doctor say he pulled the baby out. Saga instantly gripped Reita’s hand, the same thought going through their minds.
Reita voiced it. “Why isn’t she crying?”
But soon after the pediatrician approached and helped they heard it. Earsplitting cry was like music to them. They heard one of the doctors tell another to cut the cord and before the pediatrician took the baby to the table on the other side of the room to examine her, he showed them their child.
She was loud, crying for all her worth, moving her tiny arms and legs. She was slightly covered in blood. Saga gripped Reita’s hand and this time cried out loud. Reita looked down at him when the pediatrician got to work; he was smiling and crying at the same time. And all Reita could do was smile madly and nod.
“She is here, can you hear her?” Reita bowed down and kissed Saga’s forehead. “You did it honey!”
Not one of them seemed to care what was happening behind the screen where the other two doctors in the room got to work removing the placenta and on closing Saga up. They waited for the pediatrician to tell them is everything is alright. He turned around with the baby in his hands and walked back to them.
The pediatrician smiled as he handed the baby to Reita, he instructed him on how to hold her. “She is alright, healthy and very well developed. Probably the best developed baby this week, not that I want to call the young lady heavy.”
Reita grinned madly as he held his baby girl close to Saga who still cried. “She is perfect. You did a great job love.”
Saga nodded. “She really is. Hi honey!” He extended his hand and caressed baby’s chubby cheek. In her daddy’s arms she seemed to calm down. “Welcome to the world Megumi!”
