Poor Bella

My mother loves animals. My house as I grew up was a virtual menagerie. Dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, parakeets, even an iguana. I couldn't share this enthusiasm across the board you see. I cannot live with animals that I am highly allergic to, or ones that make huge shitty & pungent messes-which pretty well covers all of the above except dogs. I ( Read more... )

Damn. That's so sad. Bella was a beautiful, sweet dog. May she rest in peace.

Please pass my condolences on to your folks.

Great Danes deck17 October 6 2008, 21:49:48 UTC
I remember a Great Dane that lived at our house when I was pre-school, say about 3. His name was Duke and he could sit on a chair with his back end and have his front feet on the floor. Cool. He let me ride on his back but I seemed to remember it was quite bony. Not like my rocking horse at all. Problem became when he got too attached to my mom and then when dad got home and wanted to hug mom or (gads) wrestle with mom, Duke would get extremely protective and upset. Duke had to go ... I don't know where ... but quite possibly to Great Dane heaven. They are not long lived dogs naturally because of their great size apparently. 5 or 7 years is about their entire allotment. But I have fond memories of the great Duke. He was solid tan with a dark face and wonderful happy eyes.

:) that's unusual behaviour for a dane from my experience... Certainly that your folks wrestled was a contributing factor to that. Come to think of it, I know of no dog that takes that as play unless they're involved in the wrestling. I'm sorry Duke had to go. 8-10 by the way, is their expectancy. Though we've usually gotten 12 with the Danes we've cared for. I love those big dopey dogs... :)
