Yesterday was a pretty relaxing day. I got a hair cut, and then got back in touch with Austin for a few hours. I ran into an old photography friend from high school. Spent some time reading some Shaine Claiborne, and then went to church by myself for the first time in quite a while. I felt kinda awkward not having anyone to sit with, but I guess its kind of good to have those times when nothing really distracts you. Got to see most of the people in my dorm again, and then I got some waffles and ice cream at Waffle-opolis(campus event).Today is the first day back to school and I probably got 2 hours of sleep. I actually went to bed at about 11:30 but couldn't fall asleep. Once I did, I had a dream that I got in a car wreck on the way to a Get Up Kids reunion show. From there on, sleep was hopeless. I laid in bed all night writing imaginary blog entries about all kinds of random things such as why the campaign for Barack Obama was my generations defining cause and movement, thinking about the Irresistible Revolution (I'll probably write more about this book later. Good to know someone else out there feels about the same as me in regards to their faith), thinking about how I hope my goal in life is to find happiness in loving and caring for those in need, and not solely from a relationship, and about my personality type. I also made a playlist in my head for our inauguration road trip and i think it goes something like this
City of Blinding Lights - U2 (Democratic Convention Intro Song)
Sign, Sealed, Delivered - Stevie Wonder (Song Played 1st after rallies)
Only In America - Brooks & Dunn (Song played 2nd after rallies)
A Change Is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke (Civil Rights era song)
The Times They Are A-Changing - Bob Dylan (Song that defined the passing of the torch to the 60's generation. Became an anthem for 60's idealism)
A Dream - Common (MLK sample, how can you refuse)
We Shall Overcome - Pete Seeger (duh)
Yes We Can - will.i.am (yes we can heal this nation, yes we can repair this world!)
It's a New Day - will.i.am ("It's time for unity, For us and we, That's you and me together)
Toss Ups
This Land Is Your Land - Woodie Guthrie
America - Simon & Garfunkel
Blowin' In the Wind - Bob Dylan (though I like Joan Baez's version better)
Chimes of Freedom - Bob Dylan
Whats Going On - Marvin Gaye (remember, the title is a statement, not a question. "for only love can conquer hate")
Redemption Song - Bob Marley
Kinda sad that my generation doesn't have much to offer in the hopeful, patriotic, politically charged song category. I guess we prefer our abstract and detached lyrics better.
The Times They Are A-Changin'
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.
Spanish 2, American Dilemmas, and Public Policy, here I come. Legislative Process & Lobbying, and Political Leadership tomorrow. And I really don't know why I just spent all this time writing this entry.
