Hands of Time

When they had still been together, they had often gone for drives together like this.

The sun had just risen and coloured both, sky and water, in shades of orange and pink. The ocean sparkled, as if someone had sprinkled it with diamonds that were only visible at a time like this.

They sat on a rock at the shore, the car parked a few miles away; but not too far for them to reach it in time to go back to Tokyo.

Kazuya turned his head and looked at Jin. The wind had messed up the dark brown locks that were for once, not covered beneath one of his hats. He wore dark shaded glasses and simple jeans and a white shirt.

Jin glanced at him for a moment and grinned slightly. “What?”

“I just thought that it’s pretty unfair you look so happy.” Kazuya looked at the ocean again and breathed in the salty air.
“I don’t really look different.”

“You do”, Kazuya said. “When we came here before, you never looked like that.”

Jin shrugged. “That’s because you always made me worry so much.”

Kazuya threw him an indignant look. “Don’t make it look like I am the troublemaker here. After all, I didn’t get the shotgun wedding.”

Jin fell silent to that and kept watching the sea.

When they had still been together, they had often sat here, watching the ocean together, talking about unnecessary stuff. Teasing each other had always been a part of it.

Teasing, sarcasm, making fun of each other - they had never been serious, it had always been a game.

But, Kazuya thought, he had never realised that to him, the game had meant so much more. He had never realised that, after all, for him, it had been true love.

“You love her, don’t you?”

Jin just nodded, while the wind blew up and moved Kazuya’s hair, tugged a few strands out of his tail.

There was nothing to add, nothing to say. It couldn’t be undone; Kazuya had lost Jin and he had never had a chance to fight it.

Jin hadn’t left him any.

“It’s better like this”, Jin murmured then. “It’s better, if we just stay friends, Kazuya.”

For a moment, Kazuya thought about asking “better than what”, but he kept it to himself and just nodded instead.

When they had still been together, they had never talked about it. And now, that they weren’t together anymore, there was no point in talking about it.

Jin reached out his hand and gently put it over Kazuya’s. They both kept watching the waves breaking at the shore, listened to the steady sound, while the sun rose higher and warmed up their skin.

Kazuya turned his hand under Jin’s, until his palm was against Jin’s. They laced their fingers and loosely kept their hands between them, while they kept watching the sunrise in silence.

It felt good, how nicely Jin’s hand fitted his, Kazuya thought. If he had realised that earlier, they had probably done it a bit more often.

Holding hands now, felt like making up for all the times they had missed it.

When they had still been together.
