Jin let go of Kazuya’s shoulders and licked his lips, before he pointed at the laptop again.
“Print that form again”, he said. “I’ll sign it.”
Kazuya gave him an unbelieving look. “What?”
“If I’m going to tell you what’s going on, you’ll really have to resign and then, I’ll have to cut you from my life completely.”
“Jin”, Kazuya breathed and his eyes looked anxious. “What is going on?”
“You have a choice, Kazuya", Jin murmured. "You can turn away now and decide that you don't want to know and things will stay the way they are."
Kazuya gave Jin a sympathising look. "How would I want things to stay as they are right now?"
Jin shrugged. "It's the only way to keep you in my life."
"Like this", Kazuya answered, "I really don't want to be a part of your life."
Nodding, Jin pointed at the sofa at the other side of the room. "I'd rather sit down."
Kazuya nodded and followed Jin to the sofa, sitting next to him. "What relationship do you have with Kensaku?"
Jin looked at his feet. "None", he said. "I don't have any relations to him. I didn't know him, until he applied for the open position in management back then."
Kazuya frowned. "Why is he threatening you then? Something must have..."
"Kazuya", Jin interrupted him and looked up and into Kazuya's face. "It's because of what happened to you." He bit his lip and ran a hand through his hair. "I only realised when you were attacked - it took me a bit, but eventually, I realised it. You were in my flat, not in my house and the fire wasn't laid in the room you were in. It's all...", he hesitated and lowered his look again. "It's all familiar."
Kazuya swallowed thickly. "What does that mean?"
Jin laced his fingers in his lap. "There was that incident, about seven years ago", he started. "I didn't know of Natsuki at that point, it was shortly before I found out about it. I... I was always loose and carefree about alcohol, drugs, even sex."
"You were still like that, when I met you first", Kazuya commented.
"Old habits", Jin commented. "After Natsuki was born and after I had taken full responsibility for her, I had changed. But, at least for the sex, I've fallen back into old habits."
"You had", Kazuya corrected and reached out to put his hand over Jin's. "Since you met me, you haven't been sleeping around anymore."
Jin gave him a quick glance and nodded then. "No, I've probably been faithful for the first time in my life."
Kazuya left his hand where it was and encouraged Jin to go on talking by gently squeezing Jin's.
"Anyway", Jin said. "Seven years ago, I was pretty loose and I liked to pick up guys who were in a relationship. There was that young boy, he was just nineteen and I knew he had a boyfriend my age - twenty-one at that time." He paused for a moment. "I made him fall for me; it really didn't take that much and I convinced him to take me to his flat for the night."
Kazuya realised what was coming and he felt a cold shudder running down his spine.
"He..." Jin shook his head. "I didn't sleep with him - we were both too drunk and I fell asleep on his couch. He had lit candles", Jin added. "I can't remember why, because I never acted like I was the romantic type."
Kazuya's lips felt numb, as he moved them. "You perhaps just never realised it, but you are."
Jin looked at Kazuya again and there was so much sorrow and pain in his eyes. "He had lit those candles and then, he woke me and went ahead into his bedroom. I fell asleep again and when I woke up, the room was on fire." He swallowed and shook his head. "I panicked. I was still drunk and there was fire everywhere. I ran away, Kazuya. I knew he was still in there, but I just ran away."
Kazuya tightened his grip on Jin's hands. "Jin..."
"The police declared it as an accident. No one knew I was there and it was my secret - except for Tomo, I've never told anyone about it." Jin pulled his hands from Kazuya's and buried his face in them. "But then, it happened to you. Just like him, the fire never reached you, but the smoke did. They found you just right in time, but for him, they were too late."
Kazuya's look was empty, as he watched Jin and he didn't know what to say.
"It took me a bit to realise it, but I knew it couldn't be a coincidence. And then, I got that call from Iio. He said he knows about it and he would tell the police and that I had no right to be happy. He said he'd take you from me and if I'd fight back, if I wouldn't do as he said..."
For a moment, silence stretched between them. Then, Jin went on: "I can't let this get out. I can't let him sell his information to the police. I should have helped that boy, I shouldn't have run away - they'll convict me for that, Kazuya", he murmured. "And I can't let that happen - Natsuki needs me. They'd be able to take her away from me."
Kazuya's hands started to tremble. "You don't think you'd have to explain to me just how important Natsuki is to you, do you?"
Jin turned his look towards Kazuya and he slightly shook his head. "No. But I am afraid you have no idea just how important you are to me, as well."
It hurt, Kazuya thought - hearing that just hurt him even more. "And that is the problem, isn't it?" He shrugged. "The fact that I became this important to you. You took the most important person from Kensaku, so... he's trying to take me from you."
"And if I'll fight it", Jin added, "he'll take Natsuki instead."
Kazuya lowered his look and closed his eyes for a moment. "God, this is fucked up."
Jin watched him for a moment. "I'll sign the papers", he said then. "And take Natsuki back home. We won't have contact anymore. Now that you know about everything, I can't take any more risks."
Kazuya didn't dare looking up at Jin again. He just nodded.
"I'm sorry", Jin said lowly.
Kazuya shook his head, as he noticed a movement to his right. Natsuki strolled into the room. Kazuya's shirt was way too big for her and her hair was a bit messy.
"Hey", Kazuya said and reached out for her. She let him pull her in and onto his lap. "Did you sleep well?"
She nodded and nuzzled close. "Why are you up so early?"
Jin smiled at her. "You were snoring."
She glanced up at Kazuya and blushed heavily, before she pouted at her father. "Not true!"
Kazuya laughed and Jin watched him, before he brushed a finger over Natsuki's nose. "Should we have breakfast?"
Natsuki nodded and reached out her arms for Jin. He lifted her from Kazuya's lap and onto his arms.
"I'll make breakfast, before I leave", Kazuya said and went ahead.
"Kazuya..."
He shook his head and glanced back at Jin. "I'm still going, Jin. Not going would be way too obvious."
Jin followed him into the kitchen and sat Natsuki on one of the chairs. "Print the form before you leave then. I'll sign it, before we go back to Tokyo."
Kazuya nodded and opened one of the cupboards. He didn't even dare looking at Jin. All these plans were easily spoken, but he doubted that he would realise what they meant until he would get home tonight and Jin and Natsuki would be gone.
He wouldn't see any of them again; he would quit his job and stay here in Osaka, would start a completely new life.
But there was no way, Kazuya thought and glanced over his shoulder at Jin who looked absent-minded, too, while nipping his coffee that had to be cold by now. There was apparently no way to get around it and find another solution that would allow them to stay together.
"Did you make up?"
Kazuya turned his head to Natsuki, just like Jin and they both gave her confused looks.
"Because, tonight, you were fighting", she explained.
Kazuya blushed and threw a look at Jin.
"Baby", Jin said, "we weren't fighting at all."
"Sure you were!" Natsuki looked at Kazuya. "Papa had straddled Kazu-nii, holding his hands down and Kazu-nii was in pain."
Kazuya stared at her in disbelief. "Did you see that?"
She nodded. "If you weren't fighting, what were you doing?"
Jin sat down next to her. "Natsuki, listen..."
"Jin", Kazuya interrupted sharply.
"Luckily, I am the one who has to deal with that", Jin repeated Kazuya's words and turned back to Natsuki. "Actually...."
"You know", Natsuki said and kicked her feet at the table. "It looked a bit like in the drama I watched."
Jin frowned. "Eh?"
"The boy and the girl - they did the same thing."
"When did you watch something like that?" Jin seemed honestly terrified.
"It was in the drama. They didn't look like fighting, because they were standing, but they were kissing - it looked like Kazu-nii and Papa kissed, too."
Jin went a little pale and he didn't even dare looking at Kazuya now. "Well..."
"But", Natsuki added and looked all cheerful and carefree, "that's not possible, because Kazu-nii and Papa are both boys."
For a good minute, silence lay between the three of them. Then, Jin rose and turned to Kazuya, approaching him. Kazuya gave him a warning look, but didn't dodge, as Jin placed a short peck to his lips.
"Like this?" Jin looked at Natsuki again and he felt Kazuya's heart racing against his side.
Natsuki nodded and looked at them suspiciously.
"Is it a problem?"
She tilted her head, before she frowned. "Is Papa in love with Kazu-nii? Because, you can't kiss Kazu-nii, when you don't love him."
Jin smiled and threw a look at Kazuya, whose face had turned deep red. "I wouldn't kiss anyone else."
Natsuki nodded. "But Kazu-nii kissed me. He loves me", she explained and hopped from the chair. She took Kazuya's hand and looked up at him. "Does Kazu-nii love Papa, too?"
Kazuya gave Jin an insecure look, before he knelt down to Natsuki. "I love both of you very much, Natsuki."
"That's okay", she said and wound her tiny arms around his neck. "You can become family. Family members love each other very much."
Kazuya returned the embrace and he felt tears built up behind his eyes. He had never heard something as touching and lovely in his life before. Natsuki offered him what he had always wished for and yet, he knew he couldn't take it - Jin and him had just decided that there wasn't a way for them to have exactly what Natsuki had just suggested to be.
Jin watched them and his eyes met Kazuya's - the look they exchanged said it all and Kazuya lowered his gaze, before he gently drew Natsuki away.
"Thanks, love", he said and patted her hair.
She smiled and looked up at her father. "Can't Kazu-nii come back with us to Tokyo?"
Jin swallowed thickly, before he shook his head. "Kazuya is living and working here in Osaka now, baby."
She made a disappointed face. "But..."
"Natsuki", Jin said calmly.
She nodded and turned back to Kazuya. "You can visit Papa and Natsuki anytime."
Kazuya smiled, as he nodded. He rose again to keep on making breakfast.
"Natsuki, why don't you get dressed?" Jin tugged the hem of the shirt she wore.
She nodded and turned to hurry out of the room.
Jin looked after her for a moment, before he approached Kazuya and put his hands to Kazuya's shoulders from behind. Kazuya tensed and Jin placed a gentle kiss to the back of Kazuya's head.
"She'd accept it", Kazuya murmured. "She would accept me as your lover."
Jin nodded. "I never doubted that."
"You honestly chose a bad time to tell her about us."
Jin closed his eyes and leaned his forehead against Kazuya's hair. "She saw us, Kazuya. I'd rather not lie to her."
"It'll make it harder for her to understand why exactly I can't be with the two of you then." Kazuya stopped cutting the apple and put down the knife.
"There's no way we could explain that to her. She will just have to accept that you can't be there. But she'll know that it's not because you don't want us."
Kazuya shook his head and allowed himself to lean against Jin's chest. Jin's arms slid from Kazuya's shoulders to his waist and he pulled him even closer.
"Is there nothing we could do?"
Jin put his chin to Kazuya's shoulder. "I would have done it, if I had figured something out. There is no way."
Kazuya put his hands over Jin's.
"I'm sorry", Jin said lowly. "I'm just so sorry."
Kazuya didn’t know what to answer, so he just lowered his look.
“I’d rather have you spend the morning with us, Kazuya”, Jin murmured. “For a last time.”
Biting his lip, Kazuya shook his head and fetched away from Jin’s arms. “I am pretty sure he knows that you’re here. And he’ll know immediately what’s going on, if I don’t appear at the meeting.”
Jin framed Kazuya’s face and caught his lips in a chaste kiss. “I know.”
“Then, don’t tempt me”, Kazuya mumbled. “I’ll better get dressed.”
Jin stayed and let Kazuya walk out of the room. He heard him talk to Natsuki in the bedroom and closed his eyes, tried to sort his feelings.
Later, after they had had breakfast together and it was time to say farewell, Natsuki protested again and started crying. Jin had a hard time calming her and when she had finally let go of Kazuya, Jin followed him to the door.
Natsuki’s sniffling and muffled sobbing came from the living room and both stood in silence for a moment.
“Take your time”, Kazuya said then. “I won’t be back before evening.”
Jin nodded. “I’ll meet Ryo at twelve and we’ll take a train back together.”
“Reminds me”, Kazuya murmured. “About Ryo, he was acting quite strange yesterday.”
“I…” Jin bit his lip and shrugged. “Don’t get mad, okay?”
Kazuya just raised a brow, as he thought he might had figured it already.
“He doesn’t know what’s going on; I just asked him to go to Osaka and have an eye on you. Just to make sure nothing would happen or that you’d do something like going to Tokyo to see me.”
“Seriously”, Kazuya mumbled and crossed his arms. “You won’t ever change, will you?”
Jin shrugged again and gave Kazuya an innocent look.
Kazuya stepped closer and put a hand to Jin’s waist. “Yesterday”, he said and looked at Jin’s face, “when I dressed Natsuki for bed, I saw that you put the ring on a necklace for her.”
Jin quietly nodded.
“You really never realised it, Jin”, Kazuya murmured, “but you are quite the romantic type.”
Smiling slightly, Jin lowered his look. “You’re the only one who would say that.”
“The fact alone that you gave me one for Christmas.” Kazuya closed the distance and embraced Jin gently. “That you placed it as a welcome gift in New York. The fact that you came to New York to surprise me and spend just a single day there together with me. That you took all responsibility for me disappearing from the hospital and that you just can’t stop trying to protect me in any possible way.” He smiled against Jin’s neck. “I’d say you’re quite the romantic type.”
Jin closed his eyes and put his hands to Kazuya’s lower back. “I’ll miss you.”
Kazuya nodded slightly, as he drew back. He looked at Jin’s face and managed a smile. “As long as Natsuki wears the ring on that necklace, you’ll be reminded of how I feel.”
“Kazuya…”
“It’s fine”, Kazuya hushed Jin and he opened the door. “I’ve been prepared to let you go. I can handle it.”
“I can’t”, Jin murmured. “Kazuya, I can’t.”
Kazuya bit his lip and lowered his head, as he walked out. “You’ve been calling me by my name all morning”, he realised. “I never thought I would, but I kind of miss that nickname.”
Jin just watched him with hurtful eyes.
Swallowing thickly, Kazuya shook his head. “I put the documents to the kitchen table. Don’t forget to sign them. I…” He pressed his lips together. “Take care.”
Jin didn’t move, as Kazuya turned and walked off.
It had been Jin’s decision; it was the only way there was and there was nothing he could do about it.
He had just no way to keep Kazuya by his side.
Kazuya stared at Kensaku, as he sat at the table in the elegant restaurant.
He had just been slightly late and Ueda and Kensaku had been waiting for him already. Both had greeted him friendly and Ueda had - although Kazuya had expected it differently - started immediately to talk about the projects he had for a collaboration of the two hotels.
Kensaku was looking over documents, reading out numbers and requirements to Kazuya over the continental breakfast they had ordered.
Kazuya didn’t feel like eating at all.
He found the whole situation of sitting at a table and having breakfast with the person who was responsible for the mess his life had turned into quite bizarre.
Kensaku threw him a look over the paper and tilted his head. “Are you alright?”
Kazuya quickly nodded and sipped his coffee again; promptly burned his tongue.
“You seem a little absent-minded”, Ueda commented.
“I just didn’t sleep so well”, Kazuya murmured.
Ueda blinked his eyes. “I heard Akanishi’s daughter disappeared yesterday.” He gave Kazuya a worried look. “Could they find her by now?”
Kazuya glanced at Kensaku who was watching him with a curious expression. “Yes”, he answered, without giving any details. “Yes, they could find her.”
Ueda smiled. “No one could miss how much you adore her, so I bet you’ve been worried sick.”
Kazuya nodded. “I don’t have much contact with Jin anymore, but Natsuki is a good child and I wouldn’t want anything to happen to her.”
“Well”, Ueda said and took a bite from his bred roll. “You’re better off without Akanishi, anyway.”
Kazuya didn’t comment on that, as he knew that for Ueda no one would ever be good enough. The only one good enough in Ueda’s eyes was he himself and that would probably never change.
They returned to talk about the plans for the hotels and Kazuya tried to ignore the anger inside him for the most time, tried to ignore the pain he felt each time he just looked at Kensaku.
“Excuse me for a moment”, Ueda said after a while and got up from his chair. “I need to use the restroom.”
Kazuya looked after him and as he looked back at Kensaku, he found him smiling at Kazuya nicely. Kazuya couldn’t bring himself to smile back.
“I think it’s still a bit awkward between us. The way you broke up wasn’t very nice”, Kensaku commented.
Kazuya lowered his look. Thinking of it now, he doubted that Kensaku had ever had a real interest in him. He had only approached Kazuya to make Jin suffer.
“Seriously”, Kensaku said and put his chin to his palm. “I don’t get how Akanishi could fall for any of your lies. Your emotions are all so clearly written over your face.”
Kazuya decided to rather not look up. “He probably just didn’t expect it.”
“Oh, the innocent Jin - not expecting anyone to be less of the angel he is”, Kensaku said and his voice oozed with sarcasm.
“Listen”, Kazuya said and now, looked up from the table. “He’s done what you asked him to. I am here in Osaka and we broke off. There’s…”
“You shouldn’t say such things when you spent the last night together.”
Kazuya went pale. “Natsuki ran away”, he said. “She came to me and Jin didn’t have a choice but to follow her.”
“And he didn’t have a choice but to sleep with you tonight, either?” Kensaku gave a mocking laugh.
“We didn’t”, Kazuya said coldly. “Natsuki was there, after all.”
Kensaku raised a brow.
“He signed my resignation this morning and we won’t see each other again”, Kazuya continued.
“Oh no, this is not what I’ve wanted”, Kensaku commented. “You better make that form invalid.”
Kazuya blinked his eyes in confusion.
“If you quit and you don’t have to meet again, he will eventually get over it and that’s the last thing I want. I want him to suffer by having to talk to you every week and seeing you every once in a while. Knowing he can’t have you.”
Kazuya gave him an unbelieving and indignant look.
“You could have avoided all this, if you had just listened to my warnings”, Kensaku said and shrugged. “But you just couldn’t stay away from that guy.”
“Don’t you think you’re going too far?” Kazuya leaned in, his eyes clear and filled with disgust now. “There’s an innocent child involved.”
“It’s Akanishi’s fault that an innocent boy died, Kazuya”, Kensaku reminded him.
“I am innocent, too”, Kazuya shot back. “Yet, you almost got me killed.”
“You had the option to stay away from Akanishi. You even had the option to choose me instead.” Kensaku gave him an arrogant look. “You chose the wrong option.”
“How can you enjoy making others suffer like that?”
“I am sorry for you, Kazuya”, Kensaku admitted. “But since you decided for Jin, I have no choice but to make you suffer, too. He took Masato from me, even though he knew that boy was in a relationship.”
Kazuya tried to hold back, yet, the words came without him thinking them over. “It wasn’t Jin who took him and you know that. Don’t you think he probably just never really loved you enough, if he could go with someone else that easily? Maybe, he got from them what he couldn’t get from you.”
“Shut up”, Kensaku spat at him. “Shut up!”
Several people turned their heads to them and Kazuya coolly returned Kensaku’s heated look. “It’s easier for you to blame Jin, but you know that I am right.”
Kensaku bit his teeth, his mouth formed a white line and he had to pull himself together, as Ueda came back to the table.
For the rest of the time, they pretended nothing had ever happened while Ueda had been gone, but Kazuya could tell from Ueda’s looks that he had noticed something was off. Yet, he didn’t ask.
Later, they parted in front of the building and Kazuya decided that he didn’t want to go for all the things he had planned for the day and went for a long walk instead, before he went back home.
Somewhere in a small corner of his mind and even in his heart, he hoped Jin and Natsuki would still be there and he would get to see them for a last time.
Warn Jin, hug Natsuki once more, just…
Kazuya lowered his look, as he stood in front of his door. Anything would be fine. He craved for any gesture, any word, any touch he could get from Jin and Kazuya was aware of it.
He opened the door and felt disappointment washing over him, as he noticed their shoes were gone. The flat was quiet, the smell of coffee still lay in the air, a faint scent of shampoo and perfume.
He had upset Kensaku today - Kazuya was aware of it. Eventually, upsetting Kensaku would just backfire at them and Kazuya knew he couldn’t take that risk. Not with Natsuki involved.
He stopped at the kitchen table and stared at the documents. Jin had signed them and next to them, he had put another piece of paper with a small note.
Iio called me earlier. He seemed pretty upset and angry. I bet you know what he thinks of me signing your resignation. It’s your choice - I understand if you want to put an end to this mess. I will deal with him myself then.
Take care, pretty.
Kazuya smiled, as he read the “I really like you” in unsteady handwriting beneath Jin’s note, signed by Natsuki.
He took the documents and stared at Jin’s signature for a moment, before he tore the paper apart and dropped them into the bin at the door.
He would find a solution - until then, they would have to obey to Kensaku.
Jin felt tired.
He knew things couldn’t go on the way they did right now and yet, he was unable to do anything to change the situation.
Any possible solution in his head turned into a scenario where he would eventually lose Natsuki.
Almost a month had passed and Natsuki actually coped with it quite well. She had been whiny at first, but by now she understood that Kazuya couldn’t be there and that it didn’t mean he didn’t want to, but only that he was simply too far away.
It wasn’t that easy for Jin, though.
Summer had started and he picked up Natsuki from preschool early most of the days, taking her to go swim or buy her ice cream.
His peaceful normal life was only disturbed every now and then, when Kensaku called, reminding him that nothing about his life was peaceful.
Jin had to fear the police standing in front of his door every day, asking him to take responsibility for what he had done and taking Natsuki away from him.
After having lost Kazuya, Jin was sure that he wouldn’t be able to take losing Natsuki, too.
“Jin!” He turned and saw Yamashita approaching him with a bright smile, as Jin came into the lobby of the hotel. “I heard the good news!”
Jin tilted his head slightly and gave his friend a curious look.
“I heard that we topped the list this year.”
“Ah, that”, Jin said and smiled. “Yeah, we have quite some good numbers and surpassed Fairy View.”
Yamashita looked to the front door. “Are you about to leave and pick up Natsuki?”
Jin shook his head. “Not today. My mother wants to pick her up today to take her shopping.”
“So, are we going to have drinks together tonight?”
“Sure. Natsuki’s going to stay with my parents. I’ll pick you up, when you close the bar.”
Yamashita gave him an OK sign and turned to go back to the bar.
At reception, Jin went into the back office to get some papers and his notebook. “I’ll be in the manager suite”, he informed the receptionist girl, before he went to the lift. He typed in the code for the private floor and sighed, as he reached the silence of the suite.
No one was around here and until he would pick up Yamashita later, he would have time to himself to drown in self-pity and to just think of what he should do.
For an hour, he just devoted all his attention to his work, before he went to the bar and filled a glass with mild scotch. He leaned against the counter of black stone and stared into the liquid, as he gently swayed it.
The sound of the elevator doors slipping open drew his attention and Jin stared at them. His eyes widened, as Kazuya stepped into the room.
“Kazuya”, Jin murmured.
Kazuya just looked at him for a moment, before he hurried through the room and threw his arms around Jin’s neck.
“What’s wrong?” Jin automatically put his hands to Kazuya’s waist. “Did something happen? Are you okay?”
“I am not”, Kazuya answered. He drew back and framed Jin’s face. “I couldn’t stand it any longer.”
“You shouldn’t be here”, Jin said calmly.
“I’ve been thinking about it.” Kazuya shook his head slightly. “I thought if I just got you to tell me what exactly is going on, I would find a solution and end this misery. But there is none.” He looked into Jin’s eyes. “There is no solution.”
Jin gave him a sad look. “You should not have come”, was all he could say. His mind couldn’t process any more than that thought.
“I know that, Jin”, Kazuya said. “I know that pretty well. And yet, I almost went insane. I don’t know how you’re coping with all this and I don’t know if he’s doing anything to you or to Natsuki. I am constantly worried. I just needed to see you”, he added.
“You shouldn’t say that, pretty”, Jin murmured. Kazuya’s hands on his cheeks were slightly cold, but soft. “You shouldn’t want any of this. You should tell me just how screwed up I am; that you don’t want to be in this mess. You should tell me that we’re over.”
Kazuya pressed his lips together and returned Jin’s look. “I wanted you to tell me the truth”, he said lowly. “But if this is the truth, if the truth means that I can’t be with you, then I don’t want it.”
Kazuya leaned in and caught Jin’s lips in a kiss, a heated, passionate kiss. He held Jin’s look with his and his hands ran down to Jin’s shoulders, over his arms until he could lace his fingers with Jin’s.
“I don’t want the truth”, Kazuya murmured, despair apparent in his voice, as he licked his lips; still tasting Jin on them.
“Tell me a lie, Jin.”

Now, Kazuya is already asking for lies... well, well.
