but all I can think is of this line in Cloud's flashback:

"I joined SOLDIER so I could be like you. But by the time I made First Class, the war was already over. My big hopes of becoming a hero like you ended with the war. That's why I always sign up whenever there's a big mission. Kind of a way to prove myself."
That's ON THE WAY to Nibelheim. I know it's just one line and Cloud could have remembered wrong, and I know Zack starts in CC as 2nd Class, but ... lol. You'd think all the CC events would make Zack think he's really proved himself quite a bit.
