Published Author?

So we have our first major project of the term and it's due on October 10th.

We need to identify an important event or something in our lives we want to write about. We then write a story for a target audience (audience being the class/level of our first practicum - we get those on Friday), and illustrate the book.

Yes, folks...it's our first picture book.

We then need to publish it (privately or commercially, either way), and then we'll have a really great teaching tool to use in the first week of school to help students get to know us.

This is so AWESOME and I imagine that this might appeal to some of my friends...perhaps clawfoot? If you're interested in reading/editing/proofreading for me, there are 3 rounds of that...I'll need to go through in late September/early October.

As for illustrations, I'm starting to get some ideas, but I'm also thinking they might be really hard. My thoughts are:
1) Original pastels by me - I love pastel work and haven't done it in some time, but it can be messy and time consuming (I would scan the images)
2) Take photographs and photoshop them with cool artistic effects to get an illustrated feel...perhaps pictures from my childhood that coincide with my story
3) Try and draw some stuff...which would be hard.

Why would illustrating this book be hard? Well, my topic is essentially about how I had to quit figure skating when I was 11 because of a permanent injury. I'm going to talk about how I felt like the world had come to an end and I'd never be happy again...and then I found a passion for baseball the following year. It's about losing a dream (My dream of going to the Olympics) and then finding a new one (still the Olympics, just in baseball).

I think it'll be a great story and I've already done an initial trial write (during class...I was trying to stay awake...bad me!). I just have to come up with the illustrations.

This is such a cool project!
