Date: 23 September, 1998
Characters: George Weasley, Lee Jordan
Location: WWW and Hogwarts
Status: Semi-Private
Summary: Lee seems down and George and offers a distraction
Completion: Complete

Verity had slipped right back into the routine and George wa had excused himself to go upstairs for a bit. Lee had come into the shop earlier and was now in the back room stocking. George excused himself, leaving the counter in Verity's capable hands, and went into the back.

George couldn't have explained what it was that screamed 'wrong' about his lover, but it was obvious, nonetheless. Something about the angle of his shoulders, the very deliberately blank look on his face. He was stocking things with a precision that strangly belied concentration. Perhaps he was seeing something that wasn't actually in the building.

Wrapping his arms around him from behind, George kissed Lee's neck and put his chin on Lee's shouler. "Hey, handsome."

Lee hadn't heard George come through the door, he'd been concentrating on his task. Green boxes third shelf on the left, orange boxes second shelf in the middle. It was easy work and he didn't need to think while doing it.

He was startled when he felt George hugging him from behind, but smiled after a second. He turned his head, wanting to kiss him, the angle was awkward, though. Instead he turned around and tried again. Much better. "Hey, what's up? Good to have Verity back?"

George kissed him gladly, holding him harder than he needed to, but went on with the small talk. "It is. Almost like she never left. Ron'll be around at some point, maybe. Shelves are looking great, by the way, thanks."

George kissed him again, "Wanna run away with me? Or keep stocking?"

George clung to him, and though it was comforting to be held like this and exactly what he'd needed, Lee worried if everything was alright. "Anytime. I think I found my secret obsession with colour coding. It's strangely satisfactory." He nuzzled the side of George's head. "Are you alright?"

Lee kissed him back and squeezed him. "I always want to run away with you. Where are we going?"

"Course, I'm alright. You seem a bit off, but I'm not going to mention that until you're ready to tell me why." George hugged him again, kissing his temple.

"Someone mentioned something about a sofa that needed seeing to? I thought you might be interested in a field trip."

"Know me too well, mate," Lee said, thinking that the earlier he'd tell him and get it over with the better. He had no intention to make a drama out of it, as it wasn't worth it. "Had breakfast with my parents, had an argument, left. No big deal, just annoying."

Lee looked up when George mentioned the sofa. He'd shown him Hannah's letter, but hadn't wanted to push him to go to Hogwarts. "You up for a mission then? I'm certainly interested. Those kids are apparently in dire need of some decoration skills."

One more proper kiss, a hug that lasted too long and said things they were pretending not to acknowledge, and George let him go. "I love you."

"So," George waggled his eyebrows and then put on his best sneaky face, eyes darting side to side, "sneaking into the castle... Not sure I'm up to the task. Could be hard, fraught with danger, evil sofas to battle, rabid Hufflepuffs everywhere." He grinned and summoned a headless hat. "I'm ready!"

"Of course you do. I'm pretty, smart and my wand work is excellent." Lee's voice was more serious, when he continued. "Love you, too. Thanks."

"Sneaking into Hogwarts with its wards, finding and embellishing a sofas that's hidden somewhere we don't know, scary Hufflepuffs, maybe McGonagall? That's insane." Lee was grinning from ear to ear. "Why are we still here? We should go, this will take some time. You sure you can leave the shop?"

"Ver, I'm leaving on a secret mission. If I don't come back, Percy can sort it." He yelled this as loudly as possible and then looked at Lee. "Sorted. Three Broomsticks?"

There was a faint ringing in Lee's ear after George had shouted on the top of his voice. He took his wand out of his back pocket and nodded. "See you there." He pinched George's backside and apparated.

George had a wicked grin on his face when he disapparated. It hadn't managed to slide off during the trip, either. Lee was waiting for him, leaning casually against a wall. "Tease," he said, winking. "Shall we off?"

Lee arrived at the Three Broomsticks and had barely time to drape himself against a wall in a manner that he hoped looked casual before George arrived. "I'm not," Lee said innocently.

"We shall off," he confirmed. "Do we have a plan, or do we improvise and claim afterwards that we knew it would work all along?"

"Are." George stole a quick kiss before jerking his head in the direction of teh castle.

"As to a plan, um, no. I have no plan. I know nothing about this sofa. I have no idea where it is. I don't what it looks like, nor do I know why it's objectionable. Sounds like the perfect plan. Shall we storm the castle?"

"Brilliant." They began to walk towards the gates of Hogwards. The warded gates of warded Hogwarts. "Sure let's storm it. Maybe we can stand at the gates and cry until they let us in out of pity?"

George looked at the gates, setting his hand against them and coming away with a slight burn. "The hell? When did they do this? And why lock the barn door now? Horses... all gone."

There were other ways into the castle but George wasn't sure he'd ever be able to enter one of those tunnels again. He'd been guarding one when his twin had been taken from him. Were it not for those secret passages...

"Lunch?"

They stood in front of the gates and Lee's heart sank. They'd find a way inside, there was no question about that. He absentmindedly reached for George's hand and kissed the burned palm. The castle loomed in the distance and with his closed eyes he saw a map, hidden tunnels, and three names close together.

"Lunch. I'm starving." He was grateful that he didn't have to explain why he was suddenly reluctant to go inside. "Hogs Head or Three Broomsticks?" There was no need to ask why George had changed his mind.

"Three B's I think. They have excellent pasties, after all, and I could do with a butterbeer. Been a while." It had been a long while, since three young mean had gorged themselves on a Hogsmeade weekend and talked about the perfect bright future.

Lee hadn't let go of his hand, and George made no attempt to get free. There were so many things to be said for having someone who knew you nearly as well as, or possibly better than, you knew yourself.

"Pasties, butterbeer and Madame Rosmerta. That's what I call a perfect lunch." They turned around and walked back to the little village, to the pub where they'd been many times on Hogsmeade weekends, and sometimes in between.

It was a nice day, warm for late september, as they walked slowly. Lee still held George's hand loosely. He didn't want to let go, the touch was reassuring, but didn't want to cling either in case George wanted to have some space.

"I talked to Percy. We started to plan the radio project."

George's step began to regain some of its bounce as they headed back down the hill. It was a nice day, and the company was fabulous. He laced their fingers, starting to swing their arms back and forth as they went.

"Did you? Brilliant! Figure out what, if anything, I can do to help?"

"Yes. There's something." Actually there were a lot of things, and Lee would prefer not having to ask for favours. There was no way, though, that they could do it without George's help, so he'd have to swallow his pride and ask.

"We need a location. Doesn't have to be big, and shouldn't be too expensive to start. I was thinking about your attic. It probably needs some work, but it would be perfect. You don't have to let us rent it, of course, if you don't want to, that's alright." He was rambling.

Lee was talking way to fast, and George looked at him, both eyebrows raised. He didn't understand the concern, he really didn't. Still, if they wanted to pay him rent for the honor of cleaning out his attic...

"Absolutely. We'll have a cleaning party and bribe people with food that someone else cooked." He wasn't going to argue about the rent. At least this was a business thing. It would look better on everyone's books - his own included - if there was some sort of transaction for space. One could write such things off, naturally.

George's look clearly said 'don't be a prat'. Lee ignored it, he'd gotten that one too often to count.

"George," Lee said, kissing him forcefully, almost making them topple over. "that's brilliant. Thank you." There was something else, though, and Lee continued after they regained their balance. "When we talked at the Indian place, you, um, offered to help us with the capital. Would you still do that?" It wasn't fair to ask something like that, he didn't want to force George into something he didn't want to do. At the moment Lee couldn't see any other possibility, though.

"Percy is dealing with the license business right now. No offence, but your brother is insane. There is no procedure for getting a Britain-wide license as the WWN has always been the only station, but you can get local licenses. He's going to figure out how to get one of those, but in the meantime he's considering to apply for 86 local licenses. That's not paperwork, that's 86 times paperwork." Lee shook his head. He still couldn't believe that anyone would do this, much less voluntarily.

George wrapped his arms around Lee and enjoyed the kiss. He was still smiling when they broke apart. "Welcome and absolutely. The gold is in the picture, still in the bag I put it in when I offered it back to Harry."

He was reluctant to let go, but it made walking difficult so George moved back so they were simply holding hands again, and continued walking. "I swear Percy lives for the stuff. Fred and I once had a theory that he had ink in his veins instead of blood. Followed him around for weeks waiting for him to injure himself in some way so we could prove the point without having Mum wallop us for causing him direct injury."

Lee kissed him again. "Thanks so much. You have no idea what that means to me." That probably wasn't true, as George had been in the same place some years ago. He squeezed him again and then let go, they'd never make it to the pub otherwise.

Lee laughed at the theory. "Sounds plausible. What did you find out? Did you get close enough to see anything? And my next question is, which colour has the ink."

George was left with a sappy grin and the feeling that he certainly didn't deserve gratitude. He was, however, more than willing to take kisses at any point.

"We did, sort of." George said. He could see the 3B's in the distance. "He got... wait for it... it's terribly shocking." George drew out the moment with practiced ease. "A.... papercut. Turns out he bleeds read. You must, obviously, know that there are 'at least seven different shades of red ink, the cheapest being made with an iron component and the most expensive contining actual dragon's blood'.." George's imitation of Percy's voice was startlingly accurate. "But we didn't actually get to take a sample so the question remains."

Lee gasped. "A papercut, that's horrible. I know about the ink, I was at the shop Ang used to work and rearranged them all. She wasn't very happy about that, don't know why." They arrived at the Three Broomsticks and went inside. Lee's eyes needed a moment to adjust, the light was dim inside.

They made their way to a free table and sat down. "So, what's new? Tell me something I don't know yet."

"Alright then," Lee said with the best fake frown he could master, "keep your secrets, I don't want to know."

He gave up after a moment and grinned again. "Talking about food works always." Lee was starving, too, as he'd never had a chance to finish his breakfast this morning. He regretted that, his mother's eggs and bacon were undeniably the best. "You already know what you're having?"

George nodded, ordering a pasty, crisps and a butterbeer when the server showed up, and wating for Lee to place his own order. He then slipped his hand under the table and onto Lee's thigh.

Lee ordered the same as George, looking up when he felt George's hand on his thigh. He didn't have a real answer for the question. Maybe it was too soon.

"Don't know. Things won't change, if I'm not alright. So I guess I'll just have to adapt." Lee shrugged, he was past the point that he would try to resolve things. "Everyone knows where they stand now, so it's time to move on."

"Got your back. Front and sides to if it comes to that." George squeezed Lee's thigh softly again. "And I've and ear or a shoulder that are yours should you ever need them."

That being said, George moved back to the other subject. This wasn't the place for deep discussion, he'd just wanted his lover to know that whenever, if ever, he was ready, George was there for him. "So? What's first? Cleaning? Naming? Acquisition of random pieces of hardware?"

George was right, Lee thought. He should stop moping about, there was no use talking about this now, or ever. A change of topic was better for both of them and didn't spoil the otherwise nice day.

"I told Percy about your perfect name suggestion. He chose to blatantly ignore it, so we have to come up with something else." Their butterbeers arrived and Lee paused to drink. "I've contacted a few people who might be able to sell us some decent priced equipment, though we don't need a lot. I'm thinking about playing muggle music, so we'll have to figure out how to connect the muggle things to the magical equipment, but that won't be a big problem. Cleaning is on top of the list. I want to get the equipment out of the stock room, some of it needs a bit of work. It will be easier if there's more space to do it."

George watched Lee's face and knew he'd said the wrong thing. "Hey, I wasn't trying to shut you up, yeah? Just didn't want to push. If you want me to though, I'd do anything I could to help you. From hugging you to punching out your father, or sending your mother a million daisies or anything in between. You just need to tell me, because I the only mind I could ever read was Fred's." He twirled his butterbeer bottle.

"I'll give you the gold when we get back, and you and Percy can set up your on little accounting thing and get whatever you need. As to cleaning.... party weekend? Drag the harem to the attic and go on a search for the elusive dust bunny?"

Lee grinned. "That's because you know better, than trying to shut me up. You may be brilliant, but there are some things even you can't do. It's okay, let's just forget about it. Any help would just make it worse, definitely including punching my father or drowning my mother in flowers."

He drank some more, wondering when the food would arrived. "Better not give me the gold. Give it to Percy, he knows what to do with it, and more important, what not to do with it. The party weekend sounds good, even better if the others can be tricked into helping. Do you think we can find one of those bunnies? We could make it a mascot and give it a cute name."
