The necklace was heavy against her collarbone as she left. Kanna knew whatever physical weight it had was a fraction of the heaviness of every unwanted aspect of her former life--strictures on her movement, expectations, rules. Betrothal.
Over the years, the necklace turns from a leash into a symbol of strength, of pride, of perseverance as Kanna uses it to remind herself why she cannot--will not--return during her long journey south, during the harsh southern winters, during years of building and of loss. When she finally passes the necklace on to her daughter-in-law, it has gained an entirely new weight.
